Hello Everyone !

A little history about the car: Its a new vehicle purchased in september 2011.
The stock power wasn't sufficient for me with just 68 horses beneath the bonnet hence ordered a pete's box just after running the vehicle for 1000 km
I stay in Indore in MP so it was couriered to me here.
Fitted the box and felt some erratic power peaks after 3rd gear and then bolt from the blue....just after two days of fitting the box......The car used to shut down after running around 25-30 Kms and refused to start until and unless it is left to for an hour.....and then again the same situation came into the picture.
Reported this to Mr Peter and he advised to change the possible locations of the box in the engine bay. We tried everything to realize the same results each time.
Now finally removed the box and sent it back to Petes.
After a few days of diagnosis, I was reported that my box was a lemon, and first time in the history of Petes, a box has been found to be faulty :(
Since my hunger of power for an otherwise truly driver's car was never fulfilled, hence ordered for a new TB.
Some days later, I got a new box.
This time went ahead with installing it and kept my fingers crossed.
HURRAY.....everything was perfect this time....
The car was pulling better and smooth....
As a non techie guy, all I can say is.....
"If the stock fiesta from 2nd gear onwards is at say x km/hr after a time y......the petted one always used to be at (x +15 ) km/ hr after the same time interval y, with all other parameters being constant and same.
This continued till the top speed was achieved, which without box happened to be around 168 km/hr and with the box used to be something close to 175 km/hr (Pete's box isn't know to increase the top speed however, so the difference might have been due to the fact that I could reach 175 with the box sooner than what I would have in the stock condition. Unfortunately never had such open roads here in MP to take the stock car to the same speed)
So that's the whole increment in the performance department, and not to forget, the only other performance product I had; was an OWS turboracing engine oil.
I sourced the oil after doing somewhat around 1000km with the box and felt some more smoothness during the entire gear range, but that's it. No more gain after using an oil of Rs 5630 over stock mineral oil; Castrol of Rs 1400.
However used the oil for another 8000 km and drained it and switched back to the stock mineral oil.
The difference was evident only in terms of some co****ness in revving but wasn't such a lot, so as to compel me to shell out Rs 5630 again and go through the tedious process of sourcing it from chennai.
So that was the whole history.....the vehicle clocked 11500 kms.

The Nightmare: One evening, while returning home from my office I started feeling that each time under hard acceleration, I was feeling some jitteriness in the car, something similar to the situation when there is no diesel in the fuel tank and the car is looking to shut down, but then again it used to get smooth. This continued throughout the back-home drive.
Since I have felt this behavior sometimes before as well hence decided to ignore, hoping that switching off the engine, then switching it on again and idling for sometime will resolve the problem.
But Not This Time....The next day car felt as if there isn't any pulling power left, no acceleration, infact it was like the car isn't interested to be happy revving machine again.
Took it immediately to the Ford dealers and realized that even the sound of the engine changed to something of a tractor :'(
Immediately got the diesel checked for quality and it was perfect as expected since I always got the tank refilled from the same pump I know for years.

Finally after the diagnosis I was reported that two of the injectors have gone kaput and maybe the ECU is corrupt as well, however the ECU was later reported to be OK.
The injectors were reported to be of 15k each and the ECU to be of 54k.
I had words with Mr peter and he was quite sure that it couldn't be due to the box, however I still felt that the injection system failing must have relation with the box provided that its an Induction Modulation kind of a box and directly worked on the injectors.
Fortunately I was able to get things repaired under warranty and had to pay just Rs 2000 for engine oil replacement etc out of the total bill of 42k.
The car is back and things are fine now, it has done 500kms since then.

My primary concern now is that should I again go ahead taking the risk of installing the box ?
Its kind of scary to think of this situation arising again maybe after clocking 40k kms this time, when I don't even have the warranty left.
The box again is at Petes in cochin and has been reported to be working perfectly fine, by Mr Peter.
People at Petes are extremely professional and really nice, the have agreed to refund the amount (43.5k) back and have even advised to choose this as the option now seeing future risks.

My agony now is what should I do !!
Should I go experimenting with Spider this time which is cheaper, 24k but again a rail pressure kind of box.
My concerns are the amount of risk that spider has plus the performance and power increments it can give, provided that I wasn't even much satisfied with the power increments of Petes box which was on the contrary an IM kind of box and as per the gurus here at gearheads IM box has been reported to give higher power figures than the Rail Pressure ones.

What should I do ?
Try a pets box again ?
Take a refund, buy a cheaper box and save the remaining money, maybe this time for rail pressure faults ;)

Please guide me on this !

I would also welcome suggestion over performance figures of spider !
Is there any Ford fiesta owner with some experiences of TBs....spider, pets, dieseltronic etc. ??

Cheers & Sorry for such a long post!!

One early morning it was foggy and nice..wifey really loves the weather when it is foggy..and I absolutely love to drive when it is foggy. Idea!- we decided to go to Nandi hills nr Bangalore to see sunrise..it is always nice to see Sunrise in Nandi hills. That place has a charm that attracts people during day or night.. the nocturnal’s drive to this place for its calm and serenity and the eery climes.
Well, drive out we did. The purpose of seeing sunrise up there was never met with..we reached a bit late. We strolled around a bit and drove back.
This was around the time the cops had just acquired their new toys – Speed guns called Interceptors.I had read in the newspapers that the cops had received 2 of these and some had told me that they’d spotted one of these interceptor’s in mysore road and the other on airport road.
While we were driving back towards bangalore, I was busy giving gyaan to my wife about how the speed guns work in US and how cops in b’lore are trying to be tough cops ( yeah right) and told her that they could be on this road too trying to enforce the 80 kph speed limit and then.. I got flagged down. I diligently stopped and went to speak to the inspector sitting in the car..
Inspector – “why were you speeding?”
Me – ” I was in the speed limit and may have been at 85 kph while I was passing that truck”
Just then the cop from the back screamed “95!!” ..I had to shut up.
All escape routes shut..technology saar.
me – ” how much is the fine?”
inspector – “Rs 500/-”
me- “ok, where to pay?”
Inspector – “walk up to that constable and give him your DL and collect your receipt”.
just then, while I was busy finishing the formalities, there was one guy in a Red Swift who was driving at 100+. He was flagged down too. He stopped alright but he had no intentions of paying the fine. He walked up to the Inspector -
Speeder – “Sir, what have you stopped me for?”
inspector -”Sir, you were driving at 100+ in a 80 kph zone. you will have to pay the fine”
Speeder had no patience to even ask how much the fine was and briskly pulled out 700 rs and shoved it in the Inspector’s pocket.
Speeder -” sir, keep this, I don’t want receipt”
Inspector -”sir, please don’t do this. Please pay the fine and collect receipt”
Speeder -” sir, please, keep this, I don’t want receipt and all.” saying this he actually left the scene in his car..speeding again.
Wife and I were silently watching this Episode but atleast I did the right stuff – pay the fine and not bribe.
anyway, with this episode over, we left the scene. I was confident that the 2nd Interceptor would be in Mysore road and there was nothing that I had to worry bout even if I sped again. Wife thought differently.
Wife – “you just paid a find and you are already speeding again? reduce speed..maintain 80 kph”
me – ” don’t worry, there are only 2 interceptors in Bangalore. one is here and the other one on Mysore road..my friends have spotted it there”
wife – “but still, why take chances”
just then her version come true…the 2nd Interceptor was right there..damn. good thing I was listening to her. Just as we were passing by, we see a familiar sight..the Speeder in the red swift was Flagged down again for speeding and guess what, he was shoving money into that Inspectors pocket too..LMAO..I still can’t forget the scene. Wife and I still have a big laugh everytime we remember this episode.
Its a totally different story that these Cops aren’t as effective. I’ve sped past many times and I still don’t have a speeding fine after that one.

Shivali and me had been wanting to take the mondeo to the track for a long time now. It had been quite some time since we last went to the track as well. It just kept getting postponed for various reasons. Last saturday we decided to just head out instead of delaying it any further. So started off at 6.00pm from bangalore for MMRT. Drive was easy and smooth and we reached by around 10.30pm and took a room at Sign inn hotel where we decided to halt for the night. This was so that we could use the track during the early part of the next day when the temperatures were a little more manageable. Remember, this was chennai...

One of the things we also wanted to try out was the GoPro camera that we would be using for recording the laps in addition to the various photography tricks that Shivali wanted to try. I wanted to see how the mondeo fared on track. It was not an ideal track animal as the car weighed in at 1.5 tonnes with a power output of 143bhp. The power to weight ratio was nothing to really talk about. Engine was in decent shape even though it was not a devil per se. The gears were on the taller side as well. Stock suspensions were good for road use. The track would answer any other doubts that we harbored against the car.

Reached the track the following day at 9.30am and after formalities got down to fixing the camera and driving the car. We did not have a suction mount to fix the cam. So used the head mount strap to fix it up on the passenger seat headrest and started trying out a few laps. A few things became apparent almost immediately. The car was not going to blitz the track. This was a 2003 car with me being the fourth owner. But what it had was splendid poise on the track. even though a stiffer suspension would have made it perfect, one really could not have asked for more.

This was by far one of the best stock cars one could drive enthusiastically without worrying about flipping over or suspensions compressing to black hole dimensions. Spent time till 3.00pm on the track and had great company from bikers who were just sensational. I did a lot of laps with lap timings ranging from 2.18.xx to 2.15.28 which incidentally was the best i could do for the day. Felt that there was more room for improvement but was plain exhausted to try any ideas out. The weather was just incredibly harsh and all the time spent in air conditioned offices just makes the body a lot less durable when subjected to such stern tests.

A few details about the car itself. It is a 2003 petrol mondeo in bone stock condition minus the tires. Was running Michelin PS3's on all four corners and they seemed to fight under-steer very well. Very good tires. Squealing was present but had more to do with unreasonable expectations from the tires than the tires themselves. Engine red-lines beautifully and the gears although tall are a pleasure to work.

Have put together a small video from the track day at the following location. This was just a random lap (neither the best nor the worst). Did not have the camera all the time as it had to be taken out for space creation on the SD card.:-P

Circa 1998 I planned to take my Bike- a 1988 yr model Hero Honda CD 100- to Chitradurga (CTA) where I was studying Engineering between 1997-2001.
Now, CTA is a town around 200 kms away from Bangalore. I could’ve ridden out the distance but then, this bike had seen upwards of 100k before me and bro inherited it.
I did not want to take the chances at all and decided to load it onto a train till destination. It’s a fairly simple deal. The bike is treated as a parcel and I just had to pack it up nicely and drain out the tank completely and park it in the designated loading area. After this, it gets loaded into the parcel car and then, I get off the train at destination and pick it and move on. How hard can it be?
The train route itself was kinda funny. It departs from BLR station at 10.00pm and via a series of stops and a junction, reaches CTA by 5.00am next morning. All this round and round merry-go-round for a 200km trip. I didn’t care much about it coz I’d only sleep through the journey. Or so I thought.
The bike had to be dropped off at the loading point at 7.30 pm for a train that’d depart at 10.00pm. weird. I left it off there and loitered around aimlessly only to realize much later that the train was to depart at some other platform. Dang it!! I ran all the way to the right platform only to see the train actually move. It had started!! ..I ran (yes, fat guys can run) with 3 big bags dangling till I could grasp the grab rails and jumped into the coach which ended up being the general compartment. Shoot. Atleast I was on the train. My tickets were for the sleeper class and the general compartment had no vestibule connecting them. No problem. The train was supposed to stop at Yeshwanthpur station for a few minutes and that’s where I’d get back to my coach. How hard can that be?
The train did stop at Yeshwanthpur-how predictable-and I got off the train with my baggage and walked towards the front of the train searching for my coach. While on the way, I had this curiosity to check if my bike did get boarded. I casually walked up to the station master and enquired –
Me –“ sir, I loaded a bike onto this train did it make it? Can I pick it up at CTA?”
Station master –“ what train? What time? When did you load it?”
Me – “ 3 hrs ago and Bangalore central station..here is the receipt”
SM – “it is this train and it should be on board but why are you here? The train is moving”
Me – “ oh shit…”
Again repeat scene. Fat guy runs behind moving train with 3 big bags dangling. This time complication. My coach was at the front and I had to run a lot and when I did find my coach, the door is shut and locked from inside. I managed to grasp the grab rails and held on and started banging at the door for somebody to open it. Open they did..lucky me. Dodged a lot of stares and got to my berth and heaved a sigh of relief and fell asleep.
Sometime in the middle of the night the train stopped at Chikkajajur – a junction. It stopped for a little longer than I thought. The coaches actually get interchanged here and rerouted etc. after half hour, I thought I step outside and stretch myself and drink a cup of coffee. Stepped on to the platform and bought me a cup of coffee and wandered around there.and then, DISASTER. My bike was on the platform!! it was a perfect WTF moment. Hurriedly threw the cup of coffee and found 2 staff member and –
Me – “ why the hell is this bike outside? It is supposed come alongwith me to CTA..i want this boarded right now..come lets grab it and put it in the parcel car”
Staff – “saar, we don’t know anything. We should check with the station master”
Me – “here is the receipt..i need this loaded right now…you scumbags (actual cuss words replaced)”
Staff –“ok”
And we starting taking it to the parcel car and just then, DISASTER again. Train starts to move before we could complete the mission. Dang it..now I was out of train, Bike out of train, baggage inside train. How more complex can it get. Left the bike right there and the story repeats again..fat guy runs behind moving train but this time, no baggage. Yet again I jumped into the last coach – General Compartment. Can it get any worse than this? I guess.
Now, I was not so sure of any other stations coming in between and decided to wait till I reached CTA to decide on the baggage. After an hr from there, luck had it and the train stopped in the middle of nowhere for whatever reason I didn’t care much about. Yet again I got off the train and ran on the tracks till I reached my coach..heaved myself onto the ladder to see the doors closed and locked from inside and just then, as you could’ve guessed, the train started moving. DARN!! How many times do I have to do this..yet again somebody opened the door and yet again I dodged the stares and reached my berth and fell asleep for an hr after which we reached CTA.
I knew the bike was not on the train and I got out of the train and quietly walked out of the station before anybody came out to stone me.
I finally got my bike at 10.00am which was the schedule anyway. I learnt about it much later.

That ended my ordeal of a lifetime.

moral of the story – if there is a system and process in place, just shut the F&^% up and let them do their job..

This one post says it all. Where TBHP is a private community with few people running the show, GearHeads is more so like an open place for all the enthusiast to come and share information.

TBHP contains some very useful information for new car enthusisats and lets not make a mistake, some of information that I have read on their site is very useful, but again, its all limited, after spending may be a week or 2, you'll get used to it and then you'll start noticing that there is nothing new in the posts there. I do have my concern over the unbiasness of the posts and entries in TBHP as well. Again, this is all what I have felt after reading multiple entries there - and this is an overall feeling. The limited amout of info makes the site not as much usable as GH.

The variety is the flavor of GH. The freedom is awesome and the link above is just one example of how much open this community is. They welcome newbies like newbies and respect quotient is sufficiently good for a person like me to commit that I am a new person to car driving. (Or lets put it this way, I dont know car driving as of now). However, everyone starts from somewhere and this could be a starting point for me.

Both the sites are comparable in terms of what information they offer, however GH is a clear winner in terms of how it is offered. GH is like an open source platform, more so like Wikipedia where anyone can share information, useful information, whereas, TBHP is like a private site.

Its been almost 4 months since I am having this canon device and its awesome. Even with kit lense, it has given me some amazing performances. I have taken it to Sikkim, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. It survived everything it could and gave me amazing results.

Now I am seriously looking for lense upgrade. As usual, I am looking for two set of lenses:

1) One 50mm f1.8 or 30mm - f1.8, for portraits
2) One telephoto lense - something line 100-300mm f4-5.6 or 75-300mm IS f4-5.6

While the first one is decided, I am not very sure on the telephoto piece. I have read reviews and they all say that post 200mm, the lense performance reduces drastically. Now there is no point investing in a lense of DSLR when its going to give you crap pictures. So my research is on. I am looking for good deal places as well. In Chennai, I have been to Ellis Rd and was not greatly impressed with the attitude of the shop owners there. So I am looking for alternatives.

I feel at times that renting a car is more viable option than buying on with loan. Below are some thoughts.. Do tell us what do you think

Case 1: Buying a car on loan
Let us assume one is buying a new car priced at 6.5lakh with Rs 1.5 lakhs down payment and Rs 5 lakhs as loan amount, of 4 years duration. In this case, monthly EMI will be about 13k

Advantages of owning a car:

A car at your disposal all the time- easy to go out with friends, family etc

Certain car related expenses might be reimbursed by the company, if one is eligible

Convenient and safer than a two wheeler for regular commute

Better peer recognition

Cheaper to travel to other states-Commercial vehicles need to pay permit fee while entering other states-this is big pain and will be in several hundred to few thousand rupees

End of 4 years, you’ll be OWNING your car (it’s another story that the car will be worth less than one third of what you spent on it (Original Cost + interest on loan + insurance, tax, repairs etc-discussed later)

Disadvantages:

Additional cash outflow in terms of fuel, service, parking and toll fee

New models hit the road every few months-You might soon get bored with your old car

You're adding to already congested roads and pollution

Possible dents, scratches, breakdowns etc to cause more spending over time

Temptation to use the car when it’s not really needed

If you're transferred often, getting NOC and using your car in another state is big pain.

Driving Solo to office in a car that can seat 5 people, is such a waste of road space, fuel

More time to reach office, compared to two wheeler

Even when the car is not used, there'll be regular cash outflow in terms of insurance, EMI etc

Additional cash outflow if you employ a driver

End of 4 years, you’d have paid Rs 1.5 lakh as interest alone. Total spend on car will be about 9 lakhs (Original cost 6.5 lakh+1.5lakh loan interest+1lakh other expenses (annual insurance, any repairs etc)), but the car will be worth just about 3-4 lakhs in second hand market, about one third of what you spent on it total. If you plan to sell it off and buy a new car, you’ll effectively lose 6 lakhs on your car

Case 2: Renting a car (on self drive or with driver)

Assuming one would need a car only for weekend long drives and one goes out say 1 or 2 weekends a month, 2-4 day rental would cost about 4-8k (rental only) for a mid size car. The amount would vary depending on number of days, type of car and other factors-let us assume a monthly spend of 10k on rental, keeping in mind inflation, city taxi rentals for local commute etc (Chauffer driven car would be billed differently, on a per km basis)

Advantages:

Huge savings on the money which would have been spent as down payment (1.5 lakhs)
Interest on this 1.5lakh

Flexibility to chose a car as per need (small car, sedan, SUV etc)

Flexibility to do part journey in train/flight and rent a car in destination city

No worry about maintenance, tax, insurance etc

If touring with friends, rental cost can be shared. Not possible in an owned car (This doesn’t matter when touring with family)

No worry about depreciation, car lying unused in garage etc

End of 4 years, you’ll not be owning any car as in case 1 but you’d have spent about 6 lakhs on rental amount and you’ll have about 2 lakhs in cash (the down payment amount+ interest)

Disadvantage:

Advance planning is needed and vehicle needs to be booked in advance

Can’t customize the car as per one’s taste

Uncertainty: Sometimes booked vehicle may not be available and alternate arrangements may not be made-spoiling your plans

Additional documentation & inconvenience- need to go to rental agency and collect it/return it every time

Car rental services aren't that good in tier 2 cities. Not an ideal option in smaller towns

The car you need may not always be available

Rental agencies often keep base variants and may not have safety and entertainment features available in top end variants.

Will have to complete the trip within stipulated time. Delay may result in additional rent.

Any damage to vehicle can cost you heavily

May not be ideal for small trips/short usage

During peak seasons you may not get a car or rental amount can be much higher
