Is synthetic oil worth its additional cost?

Post Number:#1  Postby surprise » Thu Dec 31, 2009 3:52 pm

I have used synthetic oil in my previous car for more than 50k kms (after run in period). As everyone knows these oils costs 4-5 times of mineral oil, but can be replaced at an extended interval of 10k kms (5k in case of mineral oil). Though I frequent SH, I do not run very high speeds, stay within 100-120 kmph discounting the occasional blast for few seconds. Hence does it really matters for such cases? I have taken couple of my friends car, which were similarly run & could not feel any difference in any terms.

I was told that it gives much better protection during cold start, but have not heard any such complaints from the owners who have used mineral oils..what does it protects? Any techies?

It's all in the mind.

Synthetic oil is man made unlike mineral oils. There are certain advantages, but it need not be necessarily felt in all vehicles and all times.

Just ensure that you change your oil filter each time you do an oil change.

I have felt the difference in my Motorcycle. Earlier, my P180 used to vibrate at anything beyond 6000 RPM. Mine does 72 kph at 6000 RPM. Now, after I filled synthetic oil, it does 500-600 more RPM freely i.e vibes after 72 kph is now vibes after 80 kph. This does not make any difference in city rides where I ride at a max of 60 kph.

IMO, I feel the difference is only felt beyond a level which might be a little difficult to realize in cars because of the very low NVH levels compared to Motorcycles.

Mineral oils, with proper changing Intervals should do the job.

If you get a chance to Visit any shell petrol pump, just enquire on the benefits of synthetic oil. The things they tell are mostly laughable

Honestly, unless you have a heavily modded engine, I don't see the need to go in for fully synthetic oils.

Yes, my car ran a bit smoother on the last change to Mobil1. Was using Castrol Magnatec earlier. But its running higher compression and takes a lot more abuse than most other cars. For about 25k, I ran on mineral oils. Never lead to any issues. So I would say mineral oils should suit your requirement even better.

Like already mentioned change oil in regular intervals of 5k and make sure you change your oil filter each time too.

Thank you. Instead of draining out in S.Oil, may be I can look at replacing my regular air filter to mushroom filter (Filters)...Any customized piping has to be done to baleno while installation as they do for Swift?

You will need a reducer pipe to be fabricated, one end of which will fit the mushroom filter and the other should fit the plastic pipe that comes from your intake manifold.

My Indica has run 103650 km to date with whatever oil the TASC use for petrol engines. Oil & oil filter have been changed every 10K km (except for a brief period between 35K km and 60K km where I had them changed every 5K km). It still does what it is supposed to do

Is synthetic oil worth its additional cost?

Actually, the problem is the inflated costs we are seeing in India. I think the cost of Mobil 1L is around 350-400Rs, if you convert from the $ price.

And for reasons only known to the distributor, that costs 1000Rs in India.

So if synthetic were to be available in India at realistic prices, it sure is worth it.

Unfortunately, the Indian prices of Synthetic oil looks like outright "cheating", and hence it is really hard to go and splurge that money, knowing somebody is taking you for a ride. I have been a long time synthetic user, recently kicked that habit... :ugeek:

I know the margins are HUGE ..I used to get this for 750/l from the distributor direct till about 2 yrs back (I stopped using it since) .. I have also heard you can get it for 500-550/l too if you 'know' the right ppl... or are 'sufficiently' connected!

Is synthetic oil worth its additional cost?

Post Number:#10  Postby curious » Mon Jan 04, 2010 12:21 pm

I first changed to synthetic oil for my Honda City CVT in May 2009. Engine is butter smooth - more than usual. It cost me a bomb - I remember it cost around 2000 Rs as against the usual 800-900 Rs. I think it is worth it.

My problem is different - I don't run much, so even after six months, my car would have clocked only around 3000 kms. So synth oil seems like a waste of money. But what the heck! The car loves it, so I have decided to stick to synth.

Yes, the price is a shocker and they are fleecing customers, but hopefully the 3rd party service centers like Bosch or Carnation will make engine oil change a 1 hour affair and introduce synthetic oils at more decent prices in near future.

There is a huge market waiting to be tapped for running repairs - like replacing fused bulbs, air filter, oil change, brake cleaning, spark plug cleaning, not to mention Wheel alignment and balancing, car cleaning, etc., It has started off with car cleaning joints in mall/multiplex parking lots but there is a long way to go.

Cheers.

Synthetic oil is much better than mineral oil.Synthetic oil maintains viscosity even in very high heat. . The Synthetic oil use leads to longer life, more efficiency and enhanced performance for your engine.
but do not use synthetic oil in run in period. Its a must for those who rev hard from start up itself. It will reduce considerable amount of friction on start up.
