Automobile Ownership Roadmap for myself

Rating: 3 votes, 5.00 average.
Last few days were fun for me. I had some time off from work. But instead of going on a road trip, I chose to spend my time on this forum, wrote two travelogues, revisited to some god times we had as family, read some good travelogues and went on virtual trips around GQ, Bhutan, North East etc.

From tomorrow, it will be work as usual for me and going back to school for my daughter. Summer vacations got over. Today afternoon, instead of having a good afternoon nap, I thought of indulging into a typical “Gear Head Thinking” and chalk out an Automobile Ownership Roadmap and KM per Year (KMPY) for myself. It took couple of hours to put together these two things.

Automobile Ownership Roadmap mainly lists the vehicles owned / driven by me and the ones which I plan to own in coming years..

The KMPY chart is also self explanatory. I expect the current run rate expect to continue for next 3-4 years, after which as the academic focus on our daughter increases, our road trips or number of vacations expected to come down.

My current car (ANHC) will continue to be used for another 4 years, after which it will be replaced. I am yet to make up my mind whether it should be a SUV or Sedan. I will be making the decision just prior to the purchase.

Wife as been asking for a vehicle for her so that her dependency on me will be reduced. I feel that in next 4 years horizon, this request will become stronger, ending in a vehicle purchase whose main purpose is to take daughter around for her classes, hobbies, skill training etc. Of course the decision for this vehicle will be made by wife.

When my daughter turns 18, like any other 18 year old, she will demand a vehicle for her. Hence the provision for a two wheeler.

Of course before retiring from corporate career, I will be looking to change over to a brand new vehicle so that the maintenance costs will be lower during the initial ownership period which co-insides with my initial retirement years.

There is a vision to provide a four wheeler for my daughter and a caravan or SUV for myself at the fag end of the driving life.

These are just thoughts as of now. Need to work hard / smart to execute on this roadmap.

So it is back to work for me...

    Interesting road map Nomad.

I was a bit curious as to why you would want to replace a possible SUV with a sedan. I wonder if retaining the SUV (if you chose to get one in the next 4 yrs) and then have a trailer based motor-home/RV type of a vehicle hitched to it would be a feasible idea when you are ready for the caravan life you envisioned for the later years of your life.

2030 will most certainly see the emergence of motor homes or RVs in India I guess

    Thoughts?

Hi Kairalee, thanks for reading my blog and for your comments

Regarding my next vehicle, i am yet to decide on whether it should be a SUV or a sedan. It depends mainly on how many people will be in living my home at that point in time. If my parents moved in, then i would go for a SUV for sure because of seating and luggage option it provides, else it might remain a sedan.

Second, regarding your question about replacing an SUV by Sedan, i think it is natural because in my view sedans are much more mature in terms of reliability, maintenance, fuel economy etc. SUVs project much more aggressive outlook towards the personality of an individual. 10 years hence, i would have touched 50, and i feel sedan would also more blending with my personality. may be i might even choose a sedan a class above the one where i have currently positioned it in terms of price and features if budget permits.

third, about your questions on RV or carvans or motor homes being available by 2030, i feel yes it is a possibility, might be earlier as well. but being in abundance ?, i doubt. In my view they may be a niche segment for super rich. i feel that they will follow the demand cycle like the Yacht market of today.

whether i will be able to own one ?, I don't know as of now, aspirations make one work towards it.
