Btw, many people miss out on seemingly simple math. ANHC recommends regular service at 5k kms. And the bill per service is around 3-4k. Assuming a 15k run per year, it translates to 3 services at a total cost of 9-12k.

On the other hand, Fiat recommends 15k service intervals. And avg bill per service is 4-6k. Even if you opt for extras, you will touch 7-8k. What is cheaper?

Anyway, let's not go too OT. LOL, this is my own thread! I don't want bashing here.

Hi Nish, Congrats on the new car.

Since you are discussing service interval, I am joining in to put across my thoughts. Nevertheless my query on service interval below:

    a. I service my MJD (Dzire Vdi) at 5K interval and change Mineral oil @ Rs.1000 for 3 lts + Oil Filter @Rs.400 + Service @ Rs. 900 + Wheel Algn + Bal @ Rs.400= Rs.2700K. For 15000 Kms it comes to Rs. 7100.

    b. If I change over to Synthetic oil, the service interval shifts to 15000 kms. S.Oil @Rs. 3500 -4 lts + Oil filter@ Rs. 400 + Service @Rs. 2700(every 5000 km) + Wheel Aln @ Rs. 1200 (every 5000 km)= Rs. 7800.

Now which is better for the life of the car engine and peace of mind ?

First of all, you have still assumed 3 visits (see bold text) to the service center despite changing the service interval to 15k kms. Why do you want to do that?

Secondly, my comment on comparing the service interval was from the POV of 2 petrol cars. I don't have an idea how it works on diesel cars. From what I have heard, you need to service them at 7.5k intervals. So your calculation for 2 services per year would mean:
    Mineral oil @Rs 1000 for 3 ltrs x 2 times + Oil Filter @Rs 400 x 2 times + Service @Rs 900 x 2 times i.e. Rs 8,600

(Note - I have excluded wheel alignment and balancing as they will be done at 5k kms irrespective of your car's service interval)

While if the service interval is 15k (once a year), it'll come to:
    Synthetic oil @Rs 3500 per 4 ltr + Oil Filter @Rs 400 + Service @Rs 900
    i.e. Rs 4,800

    Nonetheless, this is my take:
    1. Fully synthetic oil is very good for any engine - be it diesel or petrol
    2. Frequent visits to ASS also entail wastage of time. And that is an important resource is today's world! I would not want to take out 4-5 hours of my working day in visiting the ASS every 4 months and then again going there in the evening to ensure everything is done properly.

service intervals are only a recomendation, if you live and drive in dusty environments, the viscosity of the oil will deteriorate at a faster pace, moreover fiat couldn't care less if you engine gave up much before its life is over(you will be spending on a rebuild and the expenditure won't be coming out of your pocket), there are plenty of people on the foum whose cars have done several lakhs of kms without a single rebuild, and they will definitely be in a better position to advise you about your service interval you should adhere too, case in point, VW recommends oil change at 15k kms, and inspection at 7.5k kms, my friend had bought a jetta, and now its at 34k kms, it has started to consume a quart of oil every 7.5k kms, the vw service center says 'its normal', the point is i wouldn't be comfortable if i knew my car was consuming oil at such a pace, who am i to say its wrong too, you can decide for yourself

Thanks Rallyist. I will skip if the car does not have a 'H'. 1200 Kms on Odo may not be accurate, it is as good as any second hand car. I will check with dealers in Bangalore itself for better discount. Thanks again.
