The distance to Velankani from Chennai would be around 315 kms. You can take either ECR or GST road till Pondy. ECR road is scenic compared to the GST. Tindivanam to Pondy is fantastic empty stretch.

From there its Cuddalore-Chidambaram-Sirgali-Karalikal-Nagore-Nagapatinam-Velankani. Roads are in good condition, but most of it are single laned. Expect the travel time between 5-8 hrs (depending on the start time & stoppages)

Edit: Where do you plan to stay in Velankani?

Seagate resorts/Clinton Inn are good....I would avoid the MGM cottages (Rooms are good, but expensive)

Are you pretty much sure NAGA... coz I did the trip in a 2 axle Volvo bus and they mostly took the same route and it was so pathetic... it jolted my spine to the core. The trip was in last Aug 2011. I also did the same trip in my Ford Ikon before that, and I swear not to drive in this road, coz of the poor condition of the road and that's why I went in Volvo...

So if the road condition is improved I would suggest take the car. If not please book train/bus which would be most convenient travel at this point of time. Also its summer holidays you would expect a huge crowd in there and parking cars would be pain.

Again, its just my view... enjoy ur safe trip..

Checkout the latest road conditions upto karaikal in the below thread.

Road Condition in Tamil Nadu? - Page 23

From karaikal its just 40 or 50 kms , should be doable in under an hour.

Since your going till velakanni, its better to take the Tindivanam route to Pondy. Saves considerable time.

If you start early morning from Chennai (4 AM ), you can reach karaikal at appx 10 AM (Including breaks, considering you are a sedate driver) and velankanni at 11 ,11 30.

      WildWeasel has captured it nicely.

I never felt potholes often on this route to the extent it gets onto my mind...hence I rated that as good roads. BTW, I did this trip in Feb 2012 [quota for 2012]

      ---

Pondy to Chidambaram ~ Expect slow moving traffic, esp if you stuck behind big vehicles

      Edit

They offer both individual cottage & room type accommodation. Rooms are good, but expensive. Cottages are poorly maintained (& badly designed in my opinion)

Its good to see the road conditions have improved.... when I did my trip it was pathetic... I still swear I would not take my car in this stretch until it becomes a 4 way lane... (it will never happen even after 100 years IMHO... as our politician will eat away all the money)

I doubt it will happen in the near future. But the beauty of the road will be spoilt if it becomes four lane. This is one of the beautifull roads that i would love to drive on. I am not sure which stretch you are taking about, but most of the roads are pretty good. The only period the roads were bad was during the recent cyclone. That too only between Pondy - Kadaloor Port and a few kms between sirkali and Akkur which is single lane.

The reason for bumpy ride in a bus is because most of the times it has to go off roading to give way to opposing traffic, since its not a wide road.
