Do you have the original licence with you Hrishi... the paper/book original and not the card?
Some of the oldies amongst us are due to renew our Driving License this year. Does anybody know how to go about this process? Or is there someone here who has already done it and can help us out?
Is it similar to the process of getting a license for the first time?

So what do we need to do?

The paper license in original will make matters REALLY easy! (without that you have to file a report, make affidavits etc etc )
The easiest thing for you to do would be to go back to the RTO which issued you that license and apply for renewal within 30 days of the expiry of you existing license. (Else they will want NOC etc... affidavits saying your license has not been suspended, cancelled by courts etc etc). The time limit to apply for renewal is one year from date of expiry of license - however if beyond 30 days from expiry additional fees is applicable.
The rest of the process is pretty standard and similar to applying for a new license (except people above 40 have to undergo a medical test at a designated doctors place). Attach the documents, photos, address proof, medical certificate etc and pay the fees - you will normally get your new license the same evening.

Note that requirements can vary slightly from state to state (I have known a few RTO's ask for Indira Vikas Patrika's etc - apparently they too had a 'target')

So does the license always need to be renewed by the issuing RTO ? My license was issued by an RTO in WB, can it be renewed in KA ?

Well, my license was issued at Madras Teynampet / Abbotsbury RTO in 1990. I don't think Bangalore One will undertake renewal of that oneOf course, if they do, there will be nothing like it.
I think I will visit the Thiruvanmiyur RTO on my next trip to Madras and inquire about the process.

AFAIK, Bangalore One centres used to collect only traffic fines, that's the only RTO related work they used to do.
It's a pain if you need to go back to the original RTO and renew your license - for me it means travelling 2000 km to Kolkata - it will be a lot easier getting a new license issued in Bangalore.
I don't need to renew it immediately but it's gonna come up someday ...
