New tech to boost petrol efficiency

Delphi engineers have found a way of using direct injection on petrol engines, and the breakthrough could revolutionise engine efficiency

In conventional petrol engines, a spark ignites the mixture of fuel and air. But in diesel engines, it’s the heat of compression that ignites the fuel and air mixture without the need for a spark. This allows the fuel to burn faster and more efficiently.

Until now, though, engineers have been unable to use the direct-injection method with petrol, because it’s too volatile to effectively control.

Delphi’s gasoline direct-injection compression ignition system overcomes this problem by using sophisticated valve timing, intake and exhaust tech to inject petrol in precisely controlled bursts. The company has successfully developed and tested a single-cylinder engine prototype and is already working on a more advanced system.

Husted added: “A multi-cylinder engine is being developed and will be ready to test later this year. It’s going to be a very torquey engine, with a similar feel to a diesel.”

And the new engine will have an immediate advantage over a diesel – and extra appeal to manufacturers: as unleaded fuel burns more cleanly than diesel, petrol engines don’t need an expensive and highly complex particulate filter. The new engine could be on sale by 2020.

its be interesting to see how this technology works, i've read about the functioning on gasoline direct injection thats currently doing duty in modern high end vehicles but they still depend on spark plugs for ignition, so this should be a step in the right direction

It will be interesting to see if they come up with some sort of hybrid direct injection engine which can run on both Petrol and Diesel or a new type of fuel which can give more mileage.

In India (not sure about the rest of the world), Govt has set the norms to 20.79kmpl by 2020, So Car manufactures have to lookout new technologies to improve the mileage.

At present the average fuel efficiency of all cars sold by top ten manufactures is 16.42kmpl and the government expects this to be upped to 18.15kmpl by 2015. The norms as well require the companies to improve the vehicle efficiency to 20.79kmpl by 2020; the manufacturers failing to adhere to these norms will have to face a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh and will not be allowed to sell the car in India, if they fail to meet even the One Star rating.

Documents prepared by the government also shows that the manufacturers like Diamler AG, Mahindra & Mahindra, BMW, Nissan, Audi, Toyota, Hindustan Motors and Volkswagen will have to do a lot to bring their variants and models to conformity by 2015. The efficiency will be calculated based on the mileage of total vehicles sold by the car maker – this implies that majority companies will have to sell high number of efficient cars to be able to sell limited high-end performance models.

This type of norms are present in other countries also at the present stage. I have seen many articles and design documents which mentioned this when I was in Detroit.

i guess in time that is also possible, a lot depend on fuel characteristics, either way, what vehicle or rather engine designers will have to pay attention to is to minimise wasteage of energy and increase the overall efficiency, this is usually done by down sizing engines and introducing forced induction, and the like, there are certain technologies that are doing rounds like the fiat twin air engine, which does not have a throttle body and uses valve timing to control the amount of air actually entering the cylinder, reducing pumping losses, so these technologies are doing rounds, the question is that will these technologies be available to us? and at what price? and my 'us' i mean indians, we are the second rung or third rung consumers and if at all newly released tech finds its way into out markets it horribly overpriced and out of reach of most of the consumer base

Read about this a week back, Idea is to play with thermal efficiency a petrol engine has lesser thermal efficiency compared to Diesel engine, so Delphi through an innovative ignition technology aims to replicate the efficiency of a diesel engine on petrol engines. Delphi calls this technology, gasoline-direct-injection compression ignition. Through this technology, Delphi will inject highly compressed fuel directly into a petrol engine’s combustion chamber.

it should be volumetric efficiency because of the higher static compression ratio
