    i use hazards whenever :
    - suddenly decrease speed on a highway
    - stop aside to boarding ppl
    - if the car is not running in good condition (crawling)

And have seen it is a common habit of putting on hazards when somebody want to cross roads. I think taxi walas put these rules ahead, and they do some crazy things with side indicators too.
for eg: if you want to overtake and honk, the taxi going infront of you will show a right indicator blink, and will move left !! Same way the trucks will do.
They might be bored with conventional styles, but the fun will cost some lives.

    Ya, absolutely!

I prefer yellow light as my vehicles headlamps/fog lamps.
