    Question Road Tax Question

I have a 2003 Zen at home which was bought 3 years back in Pondicherry. The car is in Hyderabad and used very sparingly.
We did not bother changing the registration to AP yet and I tried to get it done but need NOC from Pondicherry which means I have to tak ethe car all the way there as I was told by an agent long back.

So decided to pay the Road tax for AP so no headaches of getting stopped by the police. I went to the RTA today and they said they would calculate the tax on the price of the car and it worked out to Rs.34150 based on the original price of the car which was around 4.18L

Now, before I go ahead and make the payment I need to see if this is right and don't they actually calculate on the current estimated price of the car ??

    Please advise

They have to calculate the depreciated value of the car, not on the original price.

    From Hyderabad Road Tax, .

Tax rates/rules are as below: (Please verify the latest rates from the below mentioned website or RTO)
Tax is calculated over your vehicle’s ex-showroom price at the time of purchase
    (i.e. Base cost + local sales tax. E.g. Rs. 3,00,099 + 36,011).
The road tax is calculated based on the age of your car, i.e. the year in which you bought it. It is a percentage of the market value of your car as mentioned in the invoice of the car.
    For new vehicles – 9%
For vehicles less than 2 yrs old – 8%
    For vehicles > 2 yrs < 3 yrs – 7%
    For vehicles > 3 yrs < 4 yrs – 6% and so on

turbokick thanks for the link and I had gone through this over the weekend and spoke to the vehicle inspector here at the RTA and he said there is no slab system anymore. So I have got the AP Life tax paid today for Rs34150.

So you have to pay based on the invoice value.? That is ridiculous. I think that's only in AP.

    Hi Zengetz,

So did you just pay the tax in HYD and retained the PY number on your car? If this is the case, what will happen to the excess tax amount when you sell your car? (if in case you are selling)

I remember reading on TBHP (or is it gearheads? I am not sure ) abt someone that actually managed to get back the excess tax from Karnataka RTO when he/she moved to a different place. However, I don't think such things will ever become a reality in certain states/RTOs, based on my Calcutta experiences.

Yes, I paid the tax and retained the same number. I could have got the Reg transferred to AP but its an other process where i have to get NOc and all that so paid off the tax and the car can be driven happily around. Not sure about the excess implications when I wish to sell the car.

Thanks for clarifying. In that case, you are basically paying tax for two states while using the car only in one. I guess it's time for the Indian government to do something about the whole NOC thing.
