GM to discontinue optra magnum diesel

General Motors has finally decided to pull the plug on all its slow seller, first to get axed is the Optra Magnum Diesel. The Chevrolet Optra Magnum, which first began life as the Daewoo Nubira and then the Lacetti is a South Korean car that has been selling in India for more than half a decade, in the form of the Optra initially, and then as the Optra Magnum. Now, the car has reached the end of its model life cycle with GM India planning to discontinue it over the next few months.

Along with Optra, GM has decided to stop production of Aveo sedan and U-VA, both have completed their life cycle and sell only in single digit number. Now that GM has launched new Cruze and Captiva, their focus has shifted to new product launches.

Currently they have Sail twins, refreshed Spark and an MUV in the cards which would be launched before the festival season.

GM never were good at selling the Optra, even though it is such a good car.
I had inquired at 2 showrooms when I was looking, and none had any idea whether the Optra P was still selling or not. About the D, they were like, yeah that's a good car and okay sir.

Doubt Chevy has any new launches in the pipeline other than the just launched Cruze and the Captiva that is going to be launched in 2-3 months from now. Apparently a few Sonics are doing rounds in ITPL for the last few months as their R&D centre is there. But the launch is not slated to be anytime soon.

I know, but the dealers don't seem to have got stock of any new Captivas yet. They are currently trying to clear out the old stocks.

They have around 140 old Captiva in their inventory and they are trying to clear it, right now they are offering 2L discount on the old model, again new model is available only in AT and not in MT.

In an interview to one of the reporter, GM India head has confirmed about this, below is the snapshot of that interview.

Next launch will be Sail hatchback in a couple of months followed by Sail Notchback. The Enjoy MPV will come in during the festive season
Sail hatchback and Sail notchback will replace the Aveo siblings
Sail hatchback will be christened Sail U-VA and the sedan will be called as Sail
Sail siblings & Enjoy will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines
The 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet diesel will be doing duty in the Sail siblings and Enjoy in different calibrations
Sail Hatchback will be offered with the same 1.2L Smartech petrol engine

I have always felt that the Optra is such a nice car.. Power, premium feel, looks, it had it all - i dont understand why it did not sell well in India? Can readers put together 3 good reasons for why it dint do well here? And is it not sold as Daewoo Tosca in South Korea? Tks
