    Most popular cars?

Sorry, I know only a foreigner can ask such a question. But hey, I am a foreigner.

What are the most popular cars and why?

And what are the most popular cars for modifying?

And what are the modification people like to do?

And finally, how much do people spend on modifications?

BTW some interesting fact in Britain about tuning cars: When girls spend money on performance tuning they usually spend more than boys.

I have moved this thread from the ETC section to the Modifications section, since I am assuming most of the talk is going to revolve around mods?

    Now coming to your questions.....

The usual list of popular cars are.

    1. Old Honda City Vtec (D15, 104bhp, 1.5L) - One of the fastest cars in the country even in stock form. Got a wide range of aftermarket parts.

    2. Suzuki Esteem (G13B, 85bhp, 1.3L) - An affordable car with a great peppy engine and superb handling. ASS is excellent from Maruti too. Plenty of aftermarket parts available for this engine too.

    3. Suzuki Baleno (G16B, 94bhp, 1.6L) - Once again, a beautiful engine, great handling car. Aftermarket parts are limited but its handling capabilities is its biggest strength over the OHC Vtec.

    4. Palio 1.6 GTX (100bhp, 1.6L)- Great engine with absolutely no aftermarket parts available. Fiat ASS lead to the downfall of this car.

    5. Skoda RS (1.8L, 150bhp Turbcharged) - India's first performance oriented TC'd engine. Got tons of aftermarket parts.

    6. Ford Fiesta (1.6L, 101PS) - Great handling car. But need to find engine performance parts.

    7. Suzuki Swift (G13B, 1.3L, 88bhp) - Shares the same engine with the Esteem. Has lots of potential and a wonderful chassis.

    8. Suzuki SX4 (M16, 1.6L, 102bhp) - Its a sedan, unlike the JWRC hatchback that is sold in most countries. M16 has great mod potential and the car handles beautifully. Only downside is, in India it comes with 190mm GC .

These are the petrol cars that come to mind.

If you want to go by numbers, the order of modded cars would then be Esteem, OHC Vtec, Swift, Baleno, Skoda RS.

    Among the diesels...

    1. Hyundai Elantra (2L, 112bhp Crdi) - Great handling car, brilliant brakes, great engine with some mods.

    2. Hyundai Getz (1.5L, 110PS Crdi) - Fastest diesel hatchback and needs a good suspension upgrade.

    3. Hyundai Verna (1.5L, 110PS Crdi) - Also called the boat. Shares the same engine with the Getz. And must have on the list is a good aftermarket suspension.

    4. Suzuki Swift (1.3L, 75PS Crdi) - Great chassis, shares most of the parts with its petrol counterpart. Engine is a MJD.

    5. Skoda Octavia 1.9Tdi (1.9L, 90PS TDI) - Built like a tank car, very underpowered for its weight.

These are the usual cars people look to modify. In my next post I will address the rest of your questions.
    2002 Tata Indica DLS.
    2004 Suzuki Zen - A G13B eater.
2005 Suzuki Baleno - India's fastest Naturally Aspirated Baleno timed on a drag strip officially!
2008 Suzuki Swift VDi - The Rattle King.
2011 Chevrolet Cruze - A monster in the making.

Coming to the next question, what are the mods people like to do...

Well there are 4 categories of people.

    1. Those who like all the bling bling mods, includes body kits, stickers, ICE etc. Only engine mods such people would want to do is an air filter and exhaust.

    2. Then you have the slightly more educated crowd. This lot will start with air filter, suspension, FFE. And with time, they might end up with a port & polished head and a cam at max. They love playing it safe. For diesel cars, they will just put an air filter and a tuning box.

    3. Then you have those people who love going all out. Turbcharge their NA cars, run high compression on their NA engines, upgrade their turbos, remaps, standalones etc. They are never scared to experiment.

    4. The general motorsport crowd. For these guys anything goes as long as they are within the regulations specified.

I will talk wrt to costs only for the engine mods here.

Categ 1 people will at most spend 10-20k.
    Categ 2 won't mind shelling upto 50k.
    Categ 3 anywhere between 1-3L.
Categ 4 - Basically unlimited budget if you can call it that.
    2002 Tata Indica DLS.
    2004 Suzuki Zen - A G13B eater.
2005 Suzuki Baleno - India's fastest Naturally Aspirated Baleno timed on a drag strip officially!
2008 Suzuki Swift VDi - The Rattle King.
2011 Chevrolet Cruze - A monster in the making.

The Most Popular Car in India is Maruti Suzuki Alto followed by Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki WagonR . Just look at the monthly sales of these 3.
The Nano would join once the plant is commissioned.

Rajesh, Peter I guess wants to know about cars that are mod friendly? So that he can device some detailed modding plan/packages for us. And guide us on how to mod the cars the right way?

Most of the cars you mentioned end up being everyones first car purchase and their primary objective is to travel from A to B.
