      Mercedes launches C220 CDI EE

Following in BMW’s footsteps is its German rival Mercedes-Benz, which has come out with a stripped-down version of its C-class saloon, the C220 CDI Executive Edition. Slated to be the entry-level model, the Executive Edition will retail at Rs 27.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Unlike the C220 CDI Elegance, this one has no sliding sunroof, bi-Xenon headlamps, electrically foldable mirrors and CD changer - only a single CD player is available. Also, the Executive Edition has burr-walnut wood trim instead of the eucalyptus wood trim in the Elegance. It gets art leather seats in place of pure leather, Parktronic (parking sensors) are missing, and the 16-inch alloy wheels are now seven-spoke instead of the Elegance’s 12-spoke design.

‘Green tech focus to push auto exports’

Indian automakers need to enhance cost competitiveness and focus on greener technologies to increase their share in the world market.India's share to total auto exports is currently low, accounting for a mere 0.53% as per the 2008 world auto export numbers. Importantly, it delved into the area of green technologies and said it was crucial to focus on them to have an edge in export markets. "Environmental regulations are expected to become more stringent in the years to come. As a result, it becomes necessary for the companies to keep track of such developments and dedicate R&D efforts towards modifying the product designs in line with the regulations so as to profit from them.

New BMW 5-Series out on April 30

The all-new F10 5-series is set to be launched on April 30, 2010, starting with the 535i initially. The existing 5-series will be discontinued after stocks run out. The ex-showroom price for the 535i will be Rs 58 lakh across India. Following the launch of the 535i the new 530d will also make its way into the Indian market. The 525d and the 523i are expected to be launched later, around November/December.

No complaints about the engines either, especially the turbocharged 535i that puts out a lusty 306bhp. It’s easy to get enthralled by the silky low end, the huge midrange punch and willingness to rev. This is after all the same motor as in the Z4.

However, the improvements in refinement, quality and ride comfort will mean this car is even better suited to the multitude of chauffeur driven luxury car buyers in India.

      Automobile ads under scanner

Automobile manufacturers are coming in the radar of Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) – the self regulatory governing body of the advertising industry. Complaints regarding advertisements of Maruti Suzuki’s SX 4 and Mahindra & Mahindra scooter Flyte were upheld and modifications were instructed by ASCI.

The Consumer Complaints Cell (CCC) of ASCI ruled that SX4’s Television Commercial (TVC) violated safe driving practices by showing reckless driving of a car across traffic lanes. According to the CCC ruling, the TVC depicted potentially harmful practice for the driver, passengers and general public.

Similar violation of traffic rules was observed in the case of Mahindra Flyte Power Scooter Ad. The Ad depicts a picture of “three persons on the scooter without wearing helmets”, says ASCI.

The ads from Maruti Suzuki and M&M were part of complaints against six ads which were upheld in the month of February.
