The A Class vs 1 Series Confusion

All auto magazines and online forums will soon start a discussion on which car to buy between A Class and 1 series as a luxury hatchback option.

Technical spec wise, the following data holds true for the top end Diesel variants on offer
      1 Series A Class
Variant 118d Sports Plus 180 CDI Style
Engine Capacity in cc 1995 2143
      Output (KW(hp rpm) 105(143)@4000 80(109)@3200-4400
      Torque (Nm rpm) 320 @1750-2500 250 @ 1400-2800
      Acceleration (0-100) 8.6 10.6
Price Ex Showroom Delhi 29.9 lakhs 23.39 lakhs
Of course, 1 series looks good spec wise. Maybe the on road price is almost the same as well since A Series is a CBU.

Do you think then that 1 series is the obvious winner?

Without a doubt yes 1 Series will be the clear winner. Not just spec wise, looks wise I felt 1 series had a slight edge over A class. Doesn't mean A class is bad, A class is good, 1 Series is the best !

I think on-road, 1 series will be cheaper. It has more power and is a rear wheel drive. The one & only rear wheel hatchback in the world.

RWD would appeal to rich enthusiasts.

A "cheap" BMW would appeal to posers the same way a "cheap" Merc would. Therein lies the fight. What would the posers buy?

Keen drivers would make a bee line towards the 1.

I really doubt people would go for a 30L+ hatch unless you got money to burn.

As per last "official" numbers there are 42800 people in India who are super rich, i.e. More than rupees 1 crore per year.
Even if 1 % of these guys buy this car it would still mean some 428 cars per year. 225 or BMW and 203 for Merc.

Stay happy everyone, buyer, seller, analysts and we too...

Not sure what a "Poser" is and if there is any such thing. Anybody spending 20lacs+ would want the better car of the two. The rear while drive will always win as long as the buyer knows anything about cars. It just so happens that the RWD happens to be cheaper than the FWD in this case, which just sweetens the deal further. I think even if it was other way around, it could command some premium. If you are referring to people buying it purely for the brand, both are powerful brands in their own right.

Looks are definitely subjective. I am a fan of A Class's diamond grill. And somewhere I read that the A Class is dubbed as the best looking hatch ever.
And when I saw the A Class in person, I felt it is huge. Definitely has some solid road presence

Is it the only rear wheel hatch for a reason? I suspect a hatch with engine in the front and low stance will need a huge transmission tunnel to be RWD.
It could eat into the 5th person's leg space. Not sure if that is the case with the 1 series

These cars are luxury hatchbacks. So I guess the target market will consist of enthusiasts who need performance as well as boys who need their toys

Reports are that A Class was sold like hot cake, even with the 30+ on road price. Was it 400 or so bookings in 2 weeks?

Does Mercedes have the ASS package like BMW? If not, that is +1 for Beemer
