    The most straightforward route:

Munnar to Theni should be in decent shape.
Theni to Dindigul is superb - 2 lane but superb
Not sure about Dindigul to Tiruchi - worst case you'll have 4 laning going on

250 km tops (depending on where in Munnar and Tiruchi), budget for 4-5 hours

Like Hrishi has already mentioned, Dindugal-Theni route is amazing.

I remember taking the Bodi-Munnar route the first time I went to Munnar. The roads were in good shape, with a few bad, narrow sections in the ghats. I drove the ghats during late night and it felt the climb would never end. I am told this route is very scenic during the day. Unfortunately, I took the Udumalpet route on my way back.

Dindigul-Trichy road widening is still going on, little bit of a mess.

You should take under 4 hours to reach Trichy.

May I recommend the Munnar>THENI>MADURAI>TRICY route... you will definitely get there faster. It is longer than the Dundigul route only by about 25kms or so ... but the roads are in much better shape- with the Madurai-Trichy stretch entirely 4 laned!

You could take longer route via Thekkady one way. Nice scenic and curvy roads via Kambam,Kumuli,Thekaddy

I have a plan to do Chennai > Thodupuzha 2nd week of next month.

Should I take Trichy > Dindigul or will it be better to take Trichy > Madurai

Would it be better to take Theni > Pooppara > Idukki > Thodupuzha

or stay with the NH and turn after Neriyamangalam ?

Any idea on the road condition ?

Dindigul-Trichy is in good condition. In March 2011, I did it under 2 hours (9:40 Dindigul & 11:15 Trichy IOL) on my Rx. There's road widening work going on, but that's completely harmless.
