China is more developed than us and has more population than us. Petrol is almost similar price to India. But people are being taxed more on their income. The lowest slab is 25% and in India, it's 5%.

The real problem of India is lack of constructive opposition. Democracy is used to pull leg of each other. Public talks about democracy, everyone wants to be capitalist but thinks like socialist. Everyone who wants to come in power, talks about free pills of subsidies, freebies, loan waiver. But we never raise our voice against these freebies and fails to understand "Nothing is free".

We bash govt about 12,000 crore of Nirav Modi but want govt to waive of Rs 2,50,000 crore of farmers. Eventually govt tax us to waive off loans and to provide freebies.

More than 80% of population is exempted from income tax. So at the end 5% of people are being taxed directly and remaining 95% are being taxed indirectly.

I am sure you do remember when Manmohan Singh has said "Money does not grow on tree". I am sure you remember that when Manmohan Singh had said that "Minorities have first right on resources". Modi had said "Achhhe din will come". For some people good days have come, some are still waiting for Rs 15 lakhs in their account. In short, every one sails on sea of emotions. But a rational person needs to be smart enough to do his own maths rather than falling in blind bhakti or blind hate.

      -------------------------

      IMO,
      • Production of Diesel cars and (SUV) / 6 seaters needs to be stopped.
      • Diesel prices should enjoy tax waiver and to be controlled by govt and prices should be stable for long period.
      • The Petrol price should be dynamic.
      • Private cars needs to be electric / CNG / Petrol.
      • Govt to focus on Nuclear energy.

By the way, I just did an interesting calculation and this is not related to any govt.
Considering, my income, car mileage, running of 1000 KM per month and salary.
      • In 1997, I had Amby Mark IV (6 KMPL) and I used to spend 17% of my income in Fuel.
      • In 2010, I had Santro (12 KMPL) and I used to spend 5% of my income in Fuel.
      • In 2018, If I drive Kwid (22 KMPL), I will spend 3.25% of salary on Fuel.

In fact cost of running a Santro in 2010 is higher than cost of running a Kwid in 2018.

Well, you are referring to Cap's post I think. What he posted was the second list covering state capitals other than metros, so MH is not there. But there was a first list in the article for metros, where Mumbai was listed.

States are in a position to cut diesel prices by Rs 3.75 per litre and petrol prices by Rs 5.75 per litre without impacting fiscal health of the states as they have gained an additional Rs 37,426 crore due to the implementation of GST and hike in crude oil prices, State Bank of India’s research report has said. “Our estimate now suggests in FY18, due to implementation of GST, States have additionally gained Rs 18,698 crore and if we combine this figure with Rs 18,728 crore which States have gained due to increase in crude oil, the overall figure of Rs 37,426 crore will be sufficient to neutralize the revenue forgone of Rs 34,627 crore if States impose VAT on base price,” the SBI report said. “If this was so, the states could still cut the diesel prices by Rs 3.75 per litre and petrol prices by Rs 5.75 per litre without impacting fiscal health of the states,” it said.

“Our estimates suggest that out of 24 states, revenues of 16 States have increased over and above of 14 per cent baseline/ mutually accepted minimum tax growth rate between Centre and States post GST implementation below which states have to be compensated. We found that on an aggregate, states have gained by Rs 18,698 crore in revenue in FY18,” the SBI report said.

States which have gained maximum due to GST are Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Punjab among others.
