      Speaker Stands from tree trunks

Go green Speaker Stands, salvaging the gifts from nature

The Vardah cyclone uprooted several trees in Chennai.
A very old Guava and a Neem tree near my office got uprooted and I managed to salvage its trunk for DIY speaker stands.

Since I do not possess any professional carpentry cutting or shaping tools or even a working table, I just used nails, a hammer and a couple of haxa blades to get the job done.
Got the trunk cut to size from a saw mill near my place.

      Money spent:
Tree trunks: Free from nature's fury
Other wood items: used the remnants from an old project
      Trunk cutting cost: Rs. 200
      Nails: Rs. 50
Time taken: An hour or so for each stand
Outcome: A little crude, but rock solid, heavy and 100% functional
Modifications pending: Some finishing touches like wood varnish etc. to make it more appealing and adding good quality spikes in place of the plastic bush I have used now for better decoupling and stability.

gkannan; nicely done brother. As you highlighted, some finishing touches like wood varnish and quality spikes will make a lot of difference in the look as well as performance wise aspect.

Neem and Guava trees are rock solid, however very much underrated. They can definitely give any other tree (Teak or Rosewood) which we usually use for wood works a run for their money.

Wow! Great effort gkannan sir, very creative.

You should get it dark polished by a carpenter/painter with Kusum(Red) Chapra, the final result will turn out really good. Also get hold of spikes from diyaudiocart.

Your DIY spirit and Creativity is indeed awesome.
One basic question : Can anyone just pick up the uprooted tree from the public area ?,

These two trees that fell were in my office neighbours compound and he was more than happy to part with them.
Even now lots and lots of axed tree branches and axed tree trunks are lying on road margins all over Chennai.

Guys Chromecast Audio is quite brilliant. At 35USD, it surprisingly has an excellent analogue output stage will full 24bit/192khz support and 2volt output.
I got it almost 6 months back but shelved it as there was lots of dropouts.
But with the recent firmware upgrades which happens automatically, it has stabilised.
Smooth integration and almost no dropouts.

It also has a Toslink output for outboard DAC connection.

I have been continuously streaming for the last 10 hours (yeah a night out) from my laptop without any issues.

Its analogue outputs are directly connected to the NAD 3020 used here as a power amp and driving my bookshelves.

      How all you can play:
Using google cast in android and IOS devices
Using cast extension on chrome from your laptop
Run bubble pnp server to use foobar or JRiver or even Tidal and Quboz (set chromecast as a DLNA rendereer or OpenHome renderer in bubble pnp server)
Any good media server like Plex from laptop or any android phone.

Here is a screenshot of the bubble pnp server

Yep I have used Chromecast audio in car and liked it a lot. I used Tidal to play lossless music.

did you go the optical route, what are the limitations and any audible jitter effect.
i have ordered the SMSL Sanskrit 6th iteration DAC, should get it in 10 days and will find how the toslink performs.
It has been reported it now allows 24/96 to pass through

Yes I went the Optical route. No jitter heard . SMSL is kick-ass. You will enjoy it. What source? Limitation is to make it stream in car.
