I would strongly advise: don't try that long distance without a night halt at a hotel. Don't try to push for it. As we get tired driving long distance, our senses stop working at full efficiency. I have pushed myself, while feeling sleepy in last legs of the travel due to lack of sleep the night before travel, for not so long distances, and looking backward it looks foolish to have done that as it can be disastrous. So please take a night halt on the way. It is not heroic but stupid, and i don't want you to attempt it for the associated risks. Cruise control and empty roads at night can make one sleepy very fast.

Did you drive or took a flight to Chennai? If you drove, how was the drive?

      Thanks for checking speed79

      I drove all the way.

Me and my sister started from Kolkata New Town apartment morning 5:30am. After driving for 5km, I realized, the original papers of the car are at home. So went back, took the papers and then eventually started at 6am from home. Stopped at 9am for a break. Had covered 200km by then.

Next break was at 1:20pm when we stopped for lunch. Had covered 506km. This was after crossing Bhubaneshwar. Reached Vizag by evening 6pm - 815km. Took break here and crossing Vizag was a challenge. Reached Anakapalli by 9pm. Took a dinner break at 10:40pm, this was before Rajahmundry. Crossed the city at 1am and then crossed Vijaywada at 3am in the morning. Car had travelled for 1257 by now. We were greeted by rain in Vijaywada.

After 30 mins from Vijaywada, I felt tired. Stopped at a petrol station and took a nap in car till 5am. Started again. But after like 30 mins of drive. I still felt tired. This was expected as Saturday night, I had slept like 11pm and woke up at 3:30am. A sound 7-8 hrs of sleep would have made me less tired. Well, I stopped again near a toll booth and slept in car till 8am. Woke up, drove to another petrol station, put some fuel, used the rest room, freshened up and were ready to finish the last 350km distance. Started like 9am from the fuel station and drove non stop to reach Velachery home in afternoon 1:30pm.

      1. Maintained a speed of 100km/h, it helps with mileage, I am sure I got 15-16kmpl for the trip
      2. Roads and infrastructure of Odisha were better than that of AP
      3. Vijag to Vijaywada stretch is a mess. Road has pot holes and patch work is way too much. It took me like 9hrs to cross those 400km.
      4. Road from Vijaywada to Chennai is a breeze - nice 6 lane highway except the 20km stretch at Ongole where it is still 4 lanes.
      5. Extensively used fuel station for taking break. I was extremely happy with a fuel station on Vizag where I just entered for bathroom, but was greeted with smile and car windshield was cleaned. Plus they helped my sister with a lady escort to the bathroom. Amazing.
      6. Tool booths have gotten expensive - I paid toll of more than 100 at 3-4 places, I don't remember paying more than 95 anywhere in my last trip in Dec-2016
      7. All the toll booth have fasttag - but I saw trucks queued up there. I wonder what benefit eventually a private car owners will have.

I think I need to plan the trip better. If I had a good night sleep at home, I could have driven all the way. The roads are in excellent condition and XUV500 has its own highway presence where trucks and other smaller cars show you respect in those tight places where a priority can be bargained.

rksingh1 yes dada seriously the road between Vizag to Vijaywada is a mess. It’s overcrowded and sometime the highway turns into galis. Also the crossing Vijaywada is very cumbersome with tons of signals.

Next time, PM me when you come over to Kolkata.

Try using an app, Geo Tracker. Its does a good job of plotting the course of your trip with lot of relevant details.

I returned from Chennai last week. Here is a quick return trip summary:

      1. Started from Chennai home at around 9:30am in the morning after a good breakfast. Tanked up the car at Elavur, just before entering AP. There is a difference of 3 rupees a liter with AP being higher. I hoped to not take fuel in AP and then fuel up in Berhampur, Odisha next. This was the tough call as we had to cover 1020km long stretch. Car galloped 66 liters.
      2. Drove leisurely through the cities and highway along. Stopped after Ongole for lunch. Crossed Vijaywada by 4:30PM, there wasn't much of a traffic in the city. This one city has always bothered me.
      3. Rajahmundry was done over by 8pm and it was night 11 when we approached Vizag. Finished dinner before entering the city and since it was night time already, decided to drive through the city rather than the bypass. It ended up being a good decision. City roads were deserted and we easily cruised through it.
      4. Drive from Vizag to Berhampur was the best part - covered some 280km in 3.5 hours. And guess what, I still had two bars in the fuel tank which said I could still go for 178km. It gave me more than 17KMPL!! AWESOME! Stopped at a fuel station night 3am for a nap. Folded middle and last row to get a flat bed, and there we had it, a lovely caravan. Well, somewhat.
      5. It was a leisured waking up. Woke up like 7:30 and took our own sweet time to get freshened up. Put 1500 fuel in the car to make me reach WB (fuel in Odisha is 1.5rupee costlier). Started something like 8:30 from Behrampur. Drove slowly looking for a breakfast place. Odisha is poor in terms of getting good hotels on highway. But, surprisingly, to me the greenary and visuals of Odisha were much better than roughed up AP. Lovely drive. Laali touched 160 few times on a spirited highway drive.
      6. Sister wanted to go see Chilka lake. We googled up and went to Barkul, there is a water sports complex. Less I talk about it is better. The complex, even though is well designed lacks cleanliness and upkeep. You can see filth all over and it is very smelly. We couldn't spend more than 30 mins there and started drive back.
      7. Entered Bhuvaneshwar at 12 noon. Crossed the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhuvaneshwar in 40 mins or so. Stopped somewhere around 2:30 for our lunch. It was a good lunch. From there, entered Balasore at around 4:30pm, crossed Kharagpur at 5pm and was at our home by 6:30pm.

Car has crossed 20000km and it is due for another service. I tried booking one online and calling the North Point Motors in Kolkata, couldn't. Will try later. Going to Bangalore on 1st morning. Car servicing might have to wait.

There are few things I missed to mention

      1. Odisha doesn't take 10 rupee coins. There was a print out on toll booths clearly saying they will not accept 10 rupee coins. Even the tea vendors and breakfast place said no to 10 rupee coin.

      2. I encountered number of patches in very poor condition. Isn't there a law for no toll is=f road condition is not acceptable? I mean, the whole point of toll is to maintain the roads, isn't it? In general, I won't have had an issue if there are minor issues, but seriously, the road is bad.

      3. Toll paid approx 2000 INR on return.

Hotel Priya, Jaydev Vihar, Bhubaneswar is an excellent restaurant famous for its south Indian delicacies, located by the side of the NH 16. We used to have our food there only during our stay in Bhubaneswar always.

Car got a Tech Sense magnetic mobile holder previous week. Ordered it from Amazon and was delivered in 4 days. The box from amazon came opened, it seemed like a returned unit. Whatever. I have affixed it near dash. Magnetic hold is strong enough to keep my monstrous Mi Max in place, though I think the phone will topple on very poor roads.

I booked 20km service on Friday for today (Wednesday) with North Point Motors. A person is coming right now to pick my car up from office. Rather late in the day. I am not sure if I will get the car delivered back today.

Ecosense needs to be updated and there is nothing else for me to complain. Windshield water is over - I am sure they will be taken care of by default. Just for a test, I will not tell them of this and we will see whether they refill it or not.

I am also contemplating to get FastTag. I checked - it is available from Paytm, HDFC and ICICI. Paytm looked good as I already have a wallet there which I use extensively. Any of you have any feedback or suggestion on this?
