I just built my own S60 R-Design D2 120HP Diesel 6-speed manuell and with all the avaiable extras, the total price came to US $54,000 dollars.

I read somewhere that about 1000 km of roads were being built every day in India. The money has to come from somewhere.
The poor man in a village could not care less if cars or other luxury goods are taxed high. His priority is for his kids not to go to bed hungry.
If I buy a new car, I will have to pay 120% in taxes, cylinder tax, horsepower tax, emission tax, AC tax, and on top of it all, a 25% VAT. For fuel I have to pay about US 1,50 a liter for diesel and about 1,75 for petrol. 80% of that is taxes. On top of all that I have to pay for toll roads that are popping up everywhere. On a stretch of 400 kilometers I drive often, only the road tolls will cost me 50US both ways.
Parking can cost me up to US 10 dollars an hour.
Speeding fines start at 200 US dollars and for drink driving, the fine is standard. About 3000 dollars or 2 months salary, whichever is higher.
If you think India is expensive, look at China or Singapore. A friend of mine in China bought a locally made Ford Escort for 60,000 dollars. Another friend of mine in Singapore had to pay a total of about 120,000 dollars for a Toyota Innova including certificate of ownership. This only for use of the car for 10 years.
