Question Tyre Rotation - 4 or 5 tyres

      Hi all!

My car has steel rims and all 5 tyres are of same spec (I mean, the spare tyre is NOT a thin, 80kmph one). When the odo was at 5000km, I decided to get wheel balancing, wheel rotation and alignment done. I went to 'Tire Club' Trivandrum, Kerala.

When I said I wanted them to do 5 tyre rotation they said "keep the spare tyre as such and do a 4 tyre rotation so that when the tyres are to be replaced, you will have to replace only 3 as you will have the spare tyre unused and still new."

But I insisted and got the 5 tyres rotated. I thought 5 tyre rotation will be better in the long run. I would like your opinions/suggestions on this matter.

      - - A word about 'Tyre Club', stay away from them. Unprofessional and amateurish staff. The one who was doing balancing didn't even know how to operate the machine properly.

5 tyre rotation is always better provided the rotation properly, which won't happen without our involvement all the time. For records I always do 4 tyre rotation and maintain the spate as is. I felt 5th tire with alloy wheel is a waste...

      My Opinion:
It's better to use/rotate the 4 tyres which are evenly used. And leave the spare un touched.

If you use the spare tyre, it will be very new when compared to the remaining 3 in use.
It may lead to difference in grip and thus braking.

I always go for 5 tyre rotation. Keeping a tyre unused will anyways make it useless as with due course of time the rubber on the unused tyre will get hard. Rubber on tyre whether used or unused has a limited time span.

I have voted for 5 but it is better to go for 4 tyres if running is high. For those who run less and replace tyres once in 5 years the 5 method will be good.

For high odo When replacing 4 tyres ,good one among the four can be used as spare and the existing spare and the 3 tyres can be sold off.

The drawback of 5 tyres is all age up and one has to buy 5 tyres, idea of buying 3 tyres is not good.

I never rotate. When the front tyres wear out, I buy 2 new ones and move the rear wheels to the front. My spare tyre is 14 years old now and unused. The moulding marks are still on the tyre.

I would do the rotation for 4 and the 5th one just for emergency and hopefully never use it lol. Having said that I have used the 5th and the one in spare is probably not even done 1000km so I hope to get good price for it when I get rid of these 5tyres

Exactly. If the 5th tire is unused for long time, the rubber becomes hard and the ride will become bouncy.

Rotation of 4 or 5 tires also depends on the situation. If the car is new where all the tires are new, one can go for a 5 tire rotation at an interval of 5k KMs. But subsequently, when new set of tires are bought, we usually buy 4 tires, in that case, 5 tire rotation may not be possible and we have to stick to 4 tire rotation.

Rotate every 5 K kms and rotate all 5 is my policy. With alignment, balancing.

Wears all tyres evenly, and the 5th tyre contributes too.

      Replace all 5 next cycle.
