Recommendations to use a Tablet as a Car Stereo

      Hi All,

I am planning to upgrade the OEM stereo head unit in my Igen i20. I have browsed Pioneer and Sony stero models but am yet to decide one, as my primary requirement is to have HD display and Hybrid GPS system at a moderate price.

A quick question to all experts here, can we use a 7 inch tablet as a head unit. I assume, the tablet can be coupled with multi channel splitters to extract 5.1 sound output. Is my assumption correct ? Has anyone tried or come accross anyone who has used a tablet as a head unit. Please advice

      Many Thanks in Advance !!!

      Regards

      Yes, can be done.

If only using Car Audio equipment 5.1 would be possible only by using an Alpine H800 DSP probably. You could obviously build a Car PC or try out other methods to achieve the same. And there are other experts who would chip in on that very soon. Multi-channel processing in Car Audio isn't a huge thing right now except in Hi-End OEM applications. But in the next 5yrs, a lot of companies are investing in this technology.

For now, my recommendation would be use a Tablet as a HU, you can either take an Aux output to an amplifier and have a 2ch setup, but you won't have any "tuning" features that way. Or you could use Aux to a OEM HU and then build a system around that. But if you plan to run a Tablet as a dedicated HU, you'd probably need a DSP unless you want to try out Car PC or some other DIY methods.

Yes, it's an expensive route, but you can retain steering controls running an iPad as a HU. Google NAVTV Steer Blue, which will also need a PAC SWI module. We are in talks with NAVTV to bring some of their products to India.

I have a set of both that I am installing in my Ecosport.

Yeah PAC accessories for CANBUS and things... definitely seems an expensive route..

I am planning an android tab, can this be done with an android too.. As of now I am lucky that my rapid doesn't have any steering controls.

This has been a long time overdue.. when will this come out completed? Have you even started it or finalized the components?

The CANBUS route is only for cars that use CANBUS protocol. Those that don't, can just use the NAVTV Steerblue along with the SWI-X module.

Yes, can be hooked up to an Android tablet too. But then again, like I mentioned before, it's going to be an expensive route. And this is the only solution available in the market today that's reliable and works seamlessly.

If your car doesn't have steering controls, then why even break your head over this?

Work started on the Ecosport around a month ago. We had to put the build on hold, because of the work that needs to be done on the Vinod's ANHC and couple of other projects we've taken up in the last 20 days. Customers cars always take precedence over personal cars. Car should be ready by this month end, hopefully. Equipment list was decided ages ago, nearly 70% of the fabrication work is completed too.
