Wow, nice. Looking fwd to more walkathons. In todays cities, the foothpaths are fast shrinking, guess need to enjoy these walks while they last.

This is an old insight and a travel activity outside India. It is called City Walks where group of people are taken by guided walk to historic places which are spread across a road in the middle of the city. In photography world, it is called Photo walks, where a tutor leads a group of new photographers across a historic monument or area like Hampi or vatican for example.

I have written about such walks or treks earlier as well as part of my travelogue threads. i rediscovered the joy of walking some 3 months ago. initially it was not joy or fun, actually it was pain in the legs and joints after the walk, later body pain. but over period of 2-3 weeks, the pain disappeared and the pleasure or joy of walking re-surfaced. since then no looking back. i have walked over 1050+ KMs so far in last over 85 days.

In last 3 months, i have walked to many of my business meetings, shopping visits with wife, mall visits with family, visits to lakes in north bengaluru etc. one do not need foot paths for walking. one needs willingness. " Have feet, will walk " kind of spirit. my understanding is most indians do not like to walk. they prefer riding vehicles or worst, they want servants to run errands for them.

Walk along the Corridors of Power at Nayee Dilli

I have been to Delhi countless times. my first visit was sometime in 1995-96 on way to Dehradoon for a project discussion. I had travelled from Pune to Delhi by Train, Stayed at the Company Guest House in Hauz Khaas area, then took another train to Dehradoon and returned the same way after spending 4 days in Doon. both during onward and return journey, i stayed in Delhi for one night. For next 2 years i made another 3 trips to Doon same way. then came the long stay @ delhi (2 months at a stretch, twice in six months duration). Then came the Flying visits, frequent flying visits, day trips, half day trips both from Mumbai then followed from Bangalore, dedicated trips as well as metro hopping trips. Couple of times, i even transited from Delhi on way to a foreign destination. But never managed to visit some of the sights i wanted to visit.

Today morning, i ticked off one such bucket list item. doing a morning walk along the Raj Path from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Total circular walk was about 10+ KMs and took almost 3.5 hours including some smart phone photography time.

Yesterday evening, a former colleague joined me for dinner, after which we took a walk around Connaught place, Inner Circle as well as Outer Circle, did some window shopping. In one of those discussions a thought came about doing this walk. I wanted to go bit early in the day, but was advised by the former colleague, not to venture out that time and go after sun rise only. I found that Sun rise was at 6:49 AM, and weather in the morning very pleasant at 13 Deg C, with some quiet breeze, trying to freeze my hands to some extent. As the jacket and walking kept the body warm, it was overall a pleasant walk.

I started from the hotel around 6:30 PM and returned back to hotel by 10 AM. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk and as a simple common man came to as much closer to the highest authority in the country as possible, walked the corridors of power, before the really powerful people came to work, and most importantly without actually assuming the power.

I will try and post some of the pics in the next post.

The inevitable question, how bad was the pollution? Did it affect the walk in any way?

Mornings were much better, as traffic is lower. but after 8 AM, i felt it going bad due to traffic, exhaust as well as noise pollution.

I have seen many people wearing masks and walking around. i have also seen the Indoor Air Filter demand going up in Delhi. Even at Hotel Lalit lounge and conference rooms as well as IGI T3 they had installed Air Filter units.

Did it affect me personally ?, answer is probably Yes or I do not know.

It was a complete walking trip to Delhi, from the plane to IGI terminal then to exit to metro station to the platform to the exit of shivaji stadium metro station to connaught place to hotel Lalit. my hosts wanted me to join them in their car to the airport during the return trip. they got shocked when i told them that i will walk to the metro station. actually i reached IGI earlier than them, of course.

      An evening in CP

I took an Air India flight from KIA to IGI. The flight was on time, it was almost full, cheaper than so called low cost airlines, crew were younger and efficient, food was tasty, service was swift, outside views were fantastic, landing was 25 minutes ahead of time, exit walk was quick as I had no check-in luggage.

I took the airport express metro to Shivaji Stadium station and then walked to my place of stay. Evening was spent with an old colleague who joined for dinner and walking around inner and outer circles of CP. The National Flag is majestic and worth spending some time spent observing it fluttering high.

Dinner was at Kake da Hotel and Dessert was naturally opposite to the almost 88 year old Dhabha. CP has been transforming and now one can see some of the most sold brands having a store in CP. The Crowd was mostly young, if not agewise, certainly by heart. Night was also young ...

Are you a jogger/runner? A mix of run and walk thrice atleast in a week will make one enjoy city a lot more. The endorphins generated by such run or physical activity will ensure you have an active day throughout.

If your question is about me being habitual jogger or competitive runner, answer is no.

There is no need to mix or count the days of the week. Since i discovered joy of walking since some 100+ days, I believe in walking everyday, with out a break, be it week days, weekends, holidays or workdays, endorphins get generated or not.

i basically started walking just to increase my fitness and endurance. It is not good being an unfit middle aged person among a country of Billion people where 65% of population is young. I can not be young, but can be fit. that is the motivation.
