Route Infor needed to Kollur Mookambika Temple...

    Dear All,

I am planning for a 3 day road trip to Kollur Mookambika temple from chennai. Me in a double mind whether to start the journey on 22nd early morning or take a night drive on 21st itself... So I need some inputs regarding the route / road condition etc..

    Thanks in advance...

Best route is via Bangalore, Hassan, Chickmagalur, Charmadi, Karkala, Udupi & Kundapura.

Alternatively, from Chickmagalur, you can go via Aldur, Jayapura, Sringeri, Agumbe and Hebri to Kollur.

Road conditions are mostly good on both routes.
If you take a night drive, you have the advanatge of being on 4-laned roads till Bangalore, but once you are on NH48, please watch out for deviations, etc since the road is being widened from Nelamangala onwards towards Hassan.

    From Chennai take this route...
Chennai - BLR (NICE road) - Hassan - Karkala - Udipi - Kollur. If you think it cannot be done one a single day, then its very much doable till Hassan or may be even upto Karkala on a single day.

I did this route Dec 2010 & under went both trecherous as well as excellent routes. See the following thread for more information - Quick decided trip to temples in KA (pics from post 72))

The best person who can vouch for this route would be Aargee. He recently did this circuit and was full of "Praise" for the stretch especially in karnataka. Also some of the stretches he kept a terrific top speed of 20 kph!

I'd suggest you to go all the way till Hassan and then take the road to Chickmagalur. Then go through Aldur, Jayapura, Sringeri, Agumbe, Hebri and Kollur too. It's scenic.

Leave the previous night and halt at Bangalore - take the nice road and find a nice place after getting off it and on to the road to Hassan. Next early morning start from Bangalore should see you in Kollur by the evening.

Better to start in the night from Chennai.
The Distance will be around 830 kms.
    Here is your route map:

Route 1: Chennai - Bangalore (Electronic City) left - NICE Road - Tumkur Road - Nelmangala - Kunigal - Hassan - Sakleshpura - Uppiningadi - BC Road - Mangalore - Udupi - Kundapura - Kollur

This is the main route. Also currently the Shiradi ghat is in good condition. This route is more broad and straight compared to Chickmaglur route.

Route 2: Bangalore (Electronic City) left - NICE Road - Tumkur - Arsikere - Kadur - Shimoga - Thirthahalli - Siddapura - Kollur

One of my friend travelled in this route a few weeks back and reported the road condition as good.

    Route 3: Bangalore - NICE Road - Tumkur road - Nelmangala - Kunigal - Hassan - Belur -Mudigere - Kottighehara - Kalasa - Kudremukha - Karkala - Hebri - Halady - Kollur

Best id to take a break in Bangalore or Hassan , since after Hassan the tough terrain starts. So do take proper rest. Since these are single lane roads and a lot of ghat section needs to be covered.

This route has many tourist places like Belur Temple, Coffee and Tea estates along Belur - Kalasa route, With a bit detour you can visit the famous Horanadu temple , you can enjoy a lot of greenery , Also enjoy the Kudremukha forest area, Karkala also has a few tourist spots like the Venkatramana temple, Bahubali statue, etc. a bit of rural India from Karkala to Kollur with a glimps of Village life around.

    Route 4: Bangalore - NICE Road - Tumkur - Kadur - Shimoga - Hosnagara - Kollur

IIRC, there's a direct route from Kalasa to Karkala & no need to go towards Kudremukh.

This is for one trecherous stretch that I remember doing, unless it has been fixed in the recent times.

Aargee. the only thing that is fixed in recent times are the cricket matches. Guess the best bet is to stick to hassan - chickmagalur - sringeri - agumbe - hebri - kollur.

The main route from Kalasa to Karkala is via Kudremukha only. This is the main road, other routes are all lengthy.

Mudigere - Kottighehara - Kalasa road is in good condition and is a beautiful road with Tea and Coffee gardnes all along the route.
