DAC in even the costliest mobiles is pathetic. The purpose is to listen on headphones and not on a high end stereo system. I don't think there is any mobile phone other than Apple that offers a pre DAC output.

DAC just converts Digital to Analog. Irrespective of you hearing it in Head Phones or High End Stereo System - the Quality remains the Same.
Its the Amplification which makes Head Phones sound better and the High end Stereo bad !

I went through the thread. Will give it a go. I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Nexus on JB 4.3 but with deodexed stock ROM and stock kernel. At home I primarily control my Yamaha amp with my android phone with an app provided by them through my home network. My music collection is wired to the amp with a 500 gig HDD on its USB port.

      I'm in doldrums now.
I had been deaf and dumb to ICE so far and my senses are waking up. Only a little, offlate. And I'm already finding out that the Illaiyaraya mp3 collection that I have on my phone, is not doing justice to the genius. I understand that mp3 compresses songs, while at the same time, loosing the quality. Any decent FLAC version of one song could run 40 MB. This means a dedicated storage space of atleast 250GB, is needed.

I have also figured out, that the music play back is pathetic on my Nexus 4. Sounds great from my Xperia X8 (discontinued now), even better from an iPOD. And so I have come to the conclusion that mp3 forma is a big no no and I may need FLAV or equivalent versions of my fav songs. However storage limitations are a concern. My phone is just 16GB.
I might have to buy an iPOD classic 160 GB, but that wouldn't fit my Illaiyaraja and ARR collection. However, I might have to live with it though.

What are the other options that we have ?

Mudhalaipatti Carputer is one option. But that is too much of a hassle. I am sure 160 GB would mean a lot of songs. So I suggest using this only and keep refreshing the list every now and then with your 250 GB list. Also, if you take 250 GB of FLAC songs and put in on the iPod, I think it will convert to AAC format which will not take so much space. Or does iPod play FLAC directly? BTW, do you have a source for getting so much of FLAC songs?

You can use your Nexus & get USB OTG File manager to do the honours. Download Neutron media player for Android.

You will need this adapter to connect your USB stick & play files. You can get this easily from local electronics shop (Mercy a.k.a Calvin Electronics Tambaram, Mahalakshmi Electricals Chromepet)

Then get a couple of 32 GB stick which would cost you ~880 bucks in Amazon / Snapdeal. You're covered !

Downside, your phone will drain like crazy

160GB Ipod Classic would be more than sufficient.

Nope, iTunes 11 supports ALAC natively (Apple Loseless Audio Codec) a similar alternative to FLAC. That will do the job for you. There are dozens of converter softwares available to get WAV / FLAC converted to ALAC. My Favourite of the lot is Easy CD-DA Extractor.

Please keep such discussion off the public forum to avoid legal issues. Thank you.

iTunes doesn't support FLAC. You will need an external converter to convert FLAC to ALAC. Then load them up in iTunes and sync with iPod. Bit of a hassle but not too much unless you are an iTunes hater.

Nope. The only lossless format it supports is ALAC.

My best choice would be iPOD classic. But that would set me back by a nice 19k. . Not good.
The other option of playing with USBs connected to my Nexus, will need me working in TNEB. Not really portable.

      Back to square one
