Here’s a bummer that most folks waiting for the Chevrolet Aveo’s replacement will be more than a tinge disappointed with. Instead of the sharp looking Chevrolet Sonic replacing the Aveo twins, India will instead get the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback and Notchback.
While the sharpness of the Sonic Sedan and Hatchback will be sorely missed, Indians can take solace in the fact that the Sail Notchback and Hatchback are low cost cars that can perhaps be priced very competitively by GM India.
This as, the 2011 Sail Hatchback sells for around $8,800 and the 2011 Sail Notchback sells for $10,300 in China. Made by SAIC or Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, which incidentally is General Motors’ Chinese partner, the two cars are pitched as youthful and modern low cost cars.

Both these cars feature the S-TEC versions of the 1.2 Liter and 1.4 Liter engines, with the former being the same engine that powers the Chevrolet Beat Hatchback. The engines feature variable valve technology thus enabling them to be both powerful and frugal.

According to our sources, General Motors India might phase out the Aveo U-VA Hatchback and the Aveo Sedan soon and replace it with the Chevrolet Sail twins. A 2012 launch for these cars at very competitive prices is what we’re hearing currently.
We hope General Motors India plonks in diesel engines as diesel power could be the biggest push for car sales in India for the times to come. Also, with the Aveo Sedan and the U-VA Hatchback simply being too old for the Indian car market are the perennial laggards in the Indian car market and GM India could do well to bring in their replacements as soon as possible.

    Chevrolet Sail hatchback spotted

Zigwheels.com has posted spyshots of the Chevrolet Sail hatchback that could replace the Aveo U-VA next year. Sail could be positioned just above Beatand competes with the Indica Vista, Maruti Swift and Volkswagen Polo.

If the engine/gearbox combos are anything like the current Aveo's, we might have to rename them the FAIL twins

I hope they price it not more than 6 lacs(OTR) for the diesel variant. Any idea on the engine specification?

only if chevy brought their powerful diesels into these cars. With dud engines, they wont be able to compete in the market.

Chevrolet Sail comes after June, MPV during the festival season

According to a high ranking official who spoke to DNA on the company’s short-term goals, General Motors India is planning to introduce the two products it showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo, Sail and MPV, at different points in 2012.

The first launch is the Sail after June followed by the MPV in the last quarter of 2012. The GM official has not disclosed whether the Sail hatch will precede the sedan. The details on the MPV’s branding were withheld.

The Sail twins will no doubt replace the Aveos that have suffered in the absence of a diesel engine. The incoming models will rectify this problem first with their 1.3-liter diesel engine. The GM official says the pricing and product attributes of the Sail will make it stand out from the rest of the competition.

Doubts prevail on the quality, fit and finish of these cars as they are Chinese products. Can the Sails compete with recently upgraded products like the Swift, Polo and i20 that have upped the premium hatchback game in departments of quality, build and design?

Unlike the Beat or the Cruze, the two recent Chevrolet products that have won over car buyers, the Sail is not a global product. Only after their introduction can we judge if the Sonics, the Sail’s global counterpart, would have been a better option for the highly competitive B+ Segment.

To me, the side and back view of the sedan in pic 3 resembles the Etios.
