Getz Prime 1.1 - The Dark Knight

One fine morning, I decided we had enough of repairs on my old Zen after yet another visit to the MASS. It had served us faithfully for 5 years and we decided to move on. Initially, we thought of going for another Pre-owned car, but the bank interest rates for those cars and a desire for a new car finally made us decide on a new car.

Now, our budget was just 4lacs. Not many options on the market at that price other than the lower end hatchbacks. We finally scoured the forums, read a lot and decided our car will be among these 3 only:

    1. WagonR Vxi
    2. Getz 1.1
    3. Punto 1.2 Active Petrol

Both me and my brother wanted the Punto, but the basic version itself was coming to close to INR 4.5l on the road and also with the doubts regarding the dealer experiences and A.S.S, we decided to to look for the other 2. We took test drives of both WagonR and Getz.

The WagonR did not seem special in any way and the 1st feeling I got was I am going for a car that is a level below the Zen. It was good, but the drive was not smooth and the Gear was not easy, had to put some effort. Also, I could hear the engine sound quite well inside. But the car seemed peppy enough and is very ideal only for the city. But it was as cramped as the Zen. The thing was we would be getting the Vxi model and so power steering, Power Windows, Fog Lamops, etc etc.

Next was the Getz. This was test driven by my brother. We kept reading that Getz 1.1 is very underpowered and not really worth it. Well, this was on our minds as we got into the car. First impression was very good. The Car is very silent and you do not know that the engine is on at all. Space. Tons of space inside especially when compared to my Zen and the WagonR. I am 5.11 and my bro is 6.0 and with him stretching the driver seat to his usual ease, I could still sit comfy behind. The pickup was quite good and this was with the AC on. Drive felt smooth and also my bro after coming across an auto, slowed down and moved from 3rd gear on slow speed. The car did pick up without any fuss. We were both decided that this was the car we would go.

We booked the car on October 25 and after the usual slow processing by SBI, we got the car delivered today. The dealer is Trident Hyundai, 100 ft Road, Indiranagar and the experience I had with them was very excellent. The sales Guy we interacted with was one called Tejas and he knew what he was talking about and also gives good opinion. You can refer either me(Rajesh) or my bro (Sriraman) and he will remember. Not many buy the Getz

    Details:

Car: Hyundai Getz Prime 1.1 GLE
    Colour: Black
    Dealer: Trident Hyundai, Indiranagar.

    Freebies:

    1. Floor Mats and Mud Flaps
    2. Teflon Coating
    3. Sun Film - This was not on the list, but I think Shyam got one free from Advaith Hyundai. We mentioned that your competitor is giving it for free and after a pause he agreed. He has used 3M film and the finish looks excellent

    Others:

    1. Changed Tyres to the 175 profile ones from the default 155. Cost INR 12,000. Make - Bridgestone
    2. Installed AutoCop - Cost INR 2,000 with 3 year warranty

    ICE:

We got our existing Blaupunkt head unit moved to the new car. We got the JBL speakers installed and the total cost worked out to INR 6,000. Gave a discount of about INR 800.

The Final On-Road Price including the Zen exchange worked out to be approx INR 3.6 lacs.

    Pics would be up shortly.

Hope to have a long life with the car and travel atleast a % of HVK's travels

Congrats buddy. You've made a good choice of car. I too have a feeling that 1.1 is underpowered specially since the 1.3 felt so.

    How about some pics.

This evening we took the car to the Museum Road Ganesha Temple for Pooja. Oh My!! What an experience. We went during peak rush hour traffic and on the busiest roads and boy!!!. What is with the Bikers? Why does almost everyone want to commit suicide? :o Every damn guy. Phew!! FInally after finishing the pooja and while going from there to the Lavelle Road Shell bunk, we ended up with a fight with a Honda Activa guy who was trying to get in a space on the left when there wasn't any. FInally we cooled down not wanting to spoil the mood and he went and then took a complete right. Dumb Moron!! Why was he on my left then

The Drive itself was great. Driving the Zen for 5 years straight meant We were a bit cautious first time. The car felt very smooth and no issues with pickup and acceleration. Of course with 4 people and A/C on, it felt a bit sluggish but nothing very bad. The manual mentioned 2000 to 4000 rpm during the run-in, so we were keeping an eye on that. Overall the drive was enjoyable even with all the traffic and fight.

Sunday, already planned on a drive to Melkote Temple. Will give further my feedback after that

hey, did a 300 km on Sunday to Melkote and back. Forgot to take my camera along and so no pics. . We started around 7:30 and reached Melkote around 11:00 with a break for breakfast between. After having the darshan and lunch, started back from Melkote at 2:30 pm and reached Bangalore 6:00 pm.

The Car was excellent throughout. Super Silent Engine and very smooth drive.

    Some Observations:
    * Very Silent Engine and excellent NVH levels. With A/C on and windows closed, much of outside sound is eliminated.
    * Sluggish when with A/C on. That too the car was fully loaded with 5 people and struggled a bit on inclines. Overtaking meant downshifting to 4th.
    * Very Deceptive speed meaning I am approaching corners quicker than what appears.
    * Pickup not as great as other cars, but still decent. Reaches 80 within 15 sec and touches 100 kph easily. Still looking to move, but did not push it to check as still running-in.
    * Brakes quite good and stops quickly from 80 kph.

All in all, a very satisfying drive and pushed away doubts about downright sluggish performances. Already completed close to 500 km in a week . Already planning for the next drive.
