    Reasons for tyre burst

    Friends,

My neighbours had a bad time today in Chennai after the Innova which they had hired met with an accident due to the bursting of one of the tyres. The Innova lost control and rammed hard into a lamp post nearby. I always took my tyres for granted and their accident has made me to think.

How safe are the tyres we use?
What are the reasons for tyre bursts?
    How to avoid them?
Is there anything that can be done if we experience it?

    Please share your views.

over inflation, under inflation, worn out tyres, air expansion in the tyres because of heat are all the causes for bursting of the tyres.

Is this true for tubeless tyres as well?

I never check air pressure on highways while on a drive.
    1. Tyre is already heated up and the fresh cool air will distort pressure inside leading to overinflation or under-inflation
    2. Gauges are mostly defective and mostly understating the air which is pumped in

At every opportunity I feel the heat in the tyres and rims to sense if any overheating is happening.

I examine tyres for cuts or fall in pressure regularly during the course of highway drives.

Discard all tyres which are becoming bald

Never have tyres with unequal wear.

my bad. didnt notice that. taxi drivers are quite notorious for the bad shape they keep their tires in. worn out, retreaded, ply exposed, etc.

Shankar, a regular tire is tough. there is very little possibility of a well maintained tire bursting randomly. keep it properly inflated, dont subject it to more than the rated load, dont keep subjecting them to shocks which would lead to pinching or ply breaking and you can be almost certain that they wont explode in your face.

AFAIK, tubeless tyres will never burst right? And Innovas come with tubeless ones. Then still how could it have happened??

the presence or absence of a tube does not matter. a friend of mine was doing 160 on a YZF-R1 when his rear tire exploded. when you have a tire full of air at approximately two times atmospheric pressure and there is a rupture in the barrier that keeps it at a different pressure than the atmosphere around it, you will have explosive decompression. think of a plane flying at high altitude and somebody shooting a hole in it.
