Okay, I didn't know which thread to post this into, but I hope moderators do so, where they feel it would be appropriate..

      so the story:

I was just waiting in the car talking on the phone so had my ice in standby, just pressed some random buttons (fidgety fingers).

I got into a setting in my hu which was SPEAKER SELECTION..

well haven't seen it before, so I guess I thought I try to change it..

all around it had 4 settings:

      OFF , 5/4 , 6x9 , OEM..

So I thought I shall switch it to OEM and see..

To my surprise, the sound started becoming more vocalish and the midbass stopped hitting hard, instead it was a very warm kind of music (the track was a country rock genre) It was so amazing..

So excited to change it again, I started hitting the combinations I did before, after a while found out when the HU is in standby mode just pressing the rotary knob, I arrived at that menu..

so time came to select 6x9.

the sound became with more bass and more treble, but the vocal effect seemed to have disappeared..

so unhappy, it was time to change to 5/4..

this setting completely blew me away, It was like the soundstage just got pulled up front, unlike the usual surround type I have, It was like the whole imaging got pulled up the front, sound was more vocal, not sharp, like it happens to be when at high volumes, midbass was performing like it should..

I was swept away by this..

but still to reconfirm, I tried switching back to OFF..

and the magic disappeared... So quickly switched back to 5/4 and fell in love with my ICe all over again..

Moral of the story : good to have fidgety fingers..

Please try this at home, It can push you into a world of difference..

now logically speaking : I think this employs some kind of response flattening, for common speaker types in order to get the best out of them..

use audiocoder instead, much much faster than dBpoweramp and gives you more options and more codecs to choose from..

although I can use alac, I tend not to, because I don't like leaving my ipod in my car, instead I make do with 320kbps, LC-AAC , its okay tho not lossless, I tend to find a very little difference, which most might even not find..

Man, I was searching for answer of sound stage issue in my car for a long time it seems like you have found it.

I also have these settings in my HU and have played with those but couldn't bring the sound stage at front. Actually I never tried to put system on 5/4 settings becasue I have 6.5" comp at front and 6" comp at rear so thought that 5/4 will not be appropriate for these speakers.

I will try 5/4 next time to bring the sound stage at front and will check with various volume levels.

But I think its just a set of eq settings. When you sit in your car next time, try to figure out bass, treble, mid, fader settings while in media/play mode with changing various speaker settings.

BTW do you have Kenwood HU?

yes, I have a kenwood hu..

It doesn't solve the issue of sound stage, it just does a frequency curve correction, inherited by the drivers of various sizes.. 5/4 is generic term for component speakers thats why it will work..
