Tata Motors has issued a press release this afternoon stating that the Indigo e-CS VX sedan now returns a mileage of 25kmpl.
How did they achieve this figure?
- Smart ECU (marketing gimmick or serious talk?)
- Innovatively designed engine block
- Drag Reduction
- Low resistance tires
- Reworked driveline
Tata Motors does it again! 25 KMPL mileage now on the new Tata Indigo e-CS VX
Mumbai, September 5, 2011: Tata Motors today launched the Tata Indigo e-CS VX, the most fuel-efficient sedan in the country, with a mileage of 25 kmpl, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). With a host of other exciting features in the car, the Tata Indigo e-CS VX is a new trim in the Tata Indigo e-CS range.
- 25 kmpl mileage achieved with five technological advancements
- New CR4 engine with smart engine management chip
- Class defining features and new interiors
It sports the all new CR4 Common Rail Diesel engine that has a displacement of 1396 cc delivering 70 PS @ 4000 RPM. With a higher torque of 140 NM at a lower 1800-3000 RPM, improvements in gear ratios, clutch-to-start and reduction in the weight of the car by around 10 kg, the Tata Indigo e-CS VX ensures better pickup.
This mileage of 25 kmpl in the CR4 Common Rail Diesel engine is hinged on five technological advancements. The Tata Indigo e-CS VX is also available with the MPFi petrol engine. Both these engines are compliant with BS4 emission norms.
1.SMART EMS (Engine Management System) CHIP that involves perfectly calibrating engine components every micro second to optimise functionality right from valve timing to compression ratios, to pressure volume ratios, to air fuel mixture, flawlessly synchronising every engine function to deliver 25 kmpl mileage.
2.MAXIMUM CHARGE COMBUSTION An innovatively designed engine head, block and piston assembly that ensures effective intake and circulation of charge (mixture of air and fuel), thereby minimising pumping friction losses. The result is maximum combustion of charge, increased efficiency and power.
3.DRAG REDUCTION Redesigned wheel arches and subtle alterations on the exteriors, combined with a lighter shell and engine, have collectively contributed to making the car more aerodynamic, reducing the drag coefficient.
4.TRANSAXLE (Gear Box) With optimised Gear ratios to give best fuel efficiency and driveability together.
5.TYRES For drag / rolling losses reduction, optimised tyres were developed which provide low rolling losses coupled with good riding comfort and handling.
Other class defining features in the Tata Indigo e-CX VX are stylish R14 alloy wheels, satin finish front grill, headlamps and ORVM with blinkers. They, coupled with body coloured bumpers and chrome inserts on the rub rails, endow it with head turning looks.
The interiors have been enriched with dual-tone beige seating and dashboard, premium wood-finish centre console, new instrument cluster with chrome rings and rear centre armrest for enhanced comfort. The plushness is enhanced with keyless entry, ABS, Bluetooth connectivity and electrical controls for ORVMs, besides carrying forward the comfortable AC, power steering and power windows.
The car comes with a warranty of 18 months and unlimited kms, for private usage.
The Tata Indigo e-CS VX is priced at Rs. 580,339 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), for the CR4 diesel engine and the Tata Indigo e-CS GVX is priced at Rs. 497,727 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), for the MPFi petrol engine.
The Tata Indigo CS has dominated the entry mid-size segment in the country for almost 4 years with its proposition of being the most compact sedan in the market. It has been appreciated for its classy styling as much as the great value proposition that it offers at an unbeatable price to a sedan aspirant.

I have some basic questions.
1. What's CR4? Is it Common Rail 4? Does it mean that it's the TATA's DICOR engine but enhanced to meet the BS4 norms?
2. What engine options we had in the earlier versions of TATA Indigo(i.e. the non-eCS Indiago's)?
3. Does TATA Indigo now come only in the CS version? i.e. do we have just e-CS(for BS4 markets) and CS(for non-BS markets)
Can somebody/hrag/other Indigo experts help pls?

Yes
Normal TDI engine
Indigo comes in 3 version.
- CS
- Normal Indigo (BS3)
- Indigo XL (BS3)
Normal CS is available for BS 3 markets but it comes with TDI engine and not CR4, CR4 gives 25KMPL so everyone will opt for this model

AFAIK, TDI(Turbo Charged Diesel Injection) uses old school diesel technology and DICOR uses common rail technology.
Common rail is the latest technology used in Diesel engines, it is more efficient and less noisy when compared to TDI engines. TATA calls it as DICOR and other companies have their own terminology (CRDI, CRDe, CRI)

Thanks camchennai. Just thinking that the VW POLO also has the TDI engine(I assume it's same Turbo Charged Diesel) and not a Common Rail. Bit surprised that VW have priced the car high for a TDI POLO.

IIRC Polo comes with a common rail engine, not sure whether it is PD (Pump Duse) or common rail....TDI is commonly used to refer turbo charged engine...All diesel vehicle manufactured under VW umbrella is referred as TDI that doesn't means that they are not common rail.
VW actually wanted to register TDI trademark for their group companies, however it was rejected by EU

Thanks camchennai. That helps to clear up the confusion. I read somewhere on the web that the VW group(Skoda including) use PD.

Polo has a Common Rail Diesel. Just that they've named it TDI doesn't mean that's it's plain DI.
EDIT:
camchennai I think I kept the page too long before posting, that I missed seeing your post
The Indian Polo has a CR diesel - 1.2R3 12V TDI. However, VW does have a 1.4L Pump Duse diesel as well. This engine is found in the Skoda Fabia, VW Golf Mk4, etc.
