I want to know what is meaning of SUV .

which car can be said SUV . according to another guy only 50+ car can be said SUV :/


I will tell you what i think . about SUV

SUV is a Car which have capacity carry people and have ability to do off-roading (4X4) .

A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a generic marketing term for a vehicle similar to a station wagon, but built on a light-truck chassis.

It is usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on- or off-road ability, and with some pretension or ability to be used as an off-road vehicle.
Not all four-wheel drive vehicles are termed as SUV.

Some SUVs include the towing capacity of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a minivan or large sedan.

Personally, I would define SUVs as a large vehicle that has a relatively high GC with or without 4wd and can carry at least 5 adults comfortable along with a reasonable amount of luggage. A light truck chassis makes it more rugged for off road terrain.

Who is this guy, a super rich maniac? Safari, Scorpio, Endeavor, Fortuner, Yeti (and many more) all are SUVs but cost less 50L. Also 50L+ criterion is for India or world over? If 50L (about 100K) is the criterion, then even Land Cruiser (US$70+), Nissan Patrol, Volvo, Land Rover, Audi Q Series, MB, BMW X series, and almost all other SUVs will loose SUV tag. There will be one or two SUV by that definition.

well that's why i have asked me what made him think that only super expensive cars are only SUV . i told him if car has 4X4 with option of 4H and 4L can be said SUV but he say them people mover

There are plenty of examples of non SUV 4wd vehicles.

Nope...they fall under the ATV (All terrain vehicles) category.

Why go as far out as the UniMog?? We have a great example right here at home.... the MM540/550. It has 4wd, can carry 6/8 people without any comfort and ABSOLUTELY does not qualify as an SUV.

IMHO, please do not argue with your friend. Let him be happy in his dream land. A great example of a people mover was the HM TREKKER (if any one remembers that one), even the Tata Sumo (not the high end versions of course), the long wheelbase MM750's used by the Police force, the Trax Toofan or even the stretched Bolero.

I would term SUV as a vehicle that is as comfortable as a luxury car yet can take you to places where there are no roads without getting the underbody punctured by rocks and the like. It will not be a hardcore off-road vehicle like a JEEP/Gypsy/Gurkha but more of a 'soft-roader' for places like Jungle trails, kuchha roads, mud/slush or crossing 1-2 feet of water.

Ok my bit to add to the confusion, SUV means sport utility vehicle.
Where sport and Utility have different levels of definition but come under the same broad term.
Hmm you can say its a bit of a horse (sport) and a donkey(Utility). The manufactures always keep that ratio classified.
You either have a donkey that pretends to be a horse or a horse pretending to be a donkey ( Why would a horse pretend to be a donkey?)
But hey, its like you have a movie star without makeup on

Err something like the sheep in wolves over coat or somethin in those lines
