Shyam, Roads are good throughout except for the Chitradurga - Haveri stretch. It took me 10 hours of driving time to reach Panjim from Bangalore - and you know me, I hardly drive fast![]()

I have been to Goa only twice and both times i took the Shimoga route. It is indeed very scenic and i would recommend it. You cant do high speeds on this route but the drive is still very pleasant with gentle curves and all that jazz.
I did quite a lot of research for my Goa trip which I did in Sep 2009. People who helped me immensely in my research was mclaren1885, akroy, Abhijit (spitfire). I took the Shimoga-Jog-Sagar route, it was very scenic and took me around 12 hours to reach Panaji. Roads were mostly good, except the Honnavar to Karwar stretch where road were scattered with some manageable potholes.

i will have to agree with HRag that the best route to goa is via belgaum, a lil longer. but the roads are much better. if you take this route, u can stop at the goa - karnataka border and go and see dudh sagar falls. this is really awesome.
the other alternative route is via shimoga. This route is the quickest and has minimal traffic. also u get to see jog falls. but this time of the year, it would barely have any water.

Dhoodh sagar falls is the reason I'll be driving via belgaum in Jan '10.Originally Posted by [url=http://gearheads.in/post12295.html#p12295

Well, it was in my case. Took me 9hrs (driving time) to get to Goa via the Shimoga route.Originally Posted by [url=http://gearheads.in/post12299.html#p12299
Via Hubli-Ankola takes me 10-11hrs driving time.
2002 Tata Indica DLS.
2004 Suzuki Zen - A G13B eater.
2005 Suzuki Baleno - India's fastest Naturally Aspirated Baleno timed on a drag strip officially!
2008 Suzuki Swift VDi - The Rattle King.
2011 Chevrolet Cruze - A monster in the making.
So last week a couple of neighbours saw the gearheads sticker on the very dirty Safari and asked me for some route advice to Goa. I had no hesitation in recommending the Belgaum - Amboli route and Hotel Sankam to them for a VFM lunch![]()
They took the Yelahanka - Doddaballapur - Dobbaspete route both ways.
The update from them:
there's a new Kamat on the same side as Coffee Day now at Dobbaspete
9 hours 5 min driving time from Yelahanka to Panjim via Belgaum - Amboli - Sawantwadi
Return journey:
9 hours 30 min driving time from Panjim to Yelahanka
Chitradurga bypass is getting better. Rest unchanged - some work is happenining / starting on Ranebennur bypass. Worst stretches are on Davangere bypass and Harihar bypass.
They did not have to pay entry fee for their vehicle in Goa.
