I do not think it is possible. Because as per the established procedure in vogue, once the car is sold the new owner has to apply for transfer of ownership and naturally the same number will be retained and only the ownership is transferred in the Books of RTO.

Nice someone has started this thread.

    I have a similiar query/

When I shifted base to bangalore from Bombay, I got my tata Sierra here. I got the car registered here (KA) and paid the one time tax....but I was given the option to retain the MH number, which I still do. Recently someone said that I need to get it changed To KA no. Is that so??? hardly got the time to do it...since Im in Kl now and the Sierra is parked in Bangalore.

Retaining an old registration number in Delhi

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if it is (legally) possible in Delhi, to transfer my old car's registration number to a new or used car.
I went to the RTO office in Vasant Vihar, and the clerk over there was very unhelpful, his attitude was as if he was doing me a favor by even listening to my query and quickly told me that its not possible.

I do know it is possible as i see a lot of cars in vasant vihar sporting old reg numbers, I also know that I will have to scrap my old car. What i am not being able to figure out is HOW to transfer the registration?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

No, we cannot transfer registration number from one car to another.

Q.5 Can I interchange my registration No. of my vehicle to other vehicle?

Ans.No, you can not. Any vehicle registered for its particular registration mark will remain its identifications and interchange of it is not allowed.

Well you mean legally. So i suppose its not possible to do it legally. Im wondering how people are getting their old numbers on their new cars then? Obviously a decent bribe is involved, as the numbers are almost always on expensive cars.

The link is for interchange. So I guess if you want a new car to have the old number you'd have to scrap the old car (as Rodeo is ready for this).
This is very common, with people scampering all the time for VIP numbers.

How 'bout you contact the sales guy of the car showroom? He could guide you well

    Here RodeoSport
Exactly what you want, but you'd need to contact the RTO only and use a lot of you fingers.

AFAIK, this is was possible in 90s but not anymore. But, RodeoSport, why don't you check with some 2nd hand car sales guy, if this can be done by bribing some govt officials.

Also, I'll check with my friend (2nd hand car dealer) if this can be done.

nfspoet I had read that article and a few more too, what i gathered is that some states allow it but none of them ever mentioned Delhi. Haryana being one of the states that allows it, if its possible for HR RTO to do it, Delhi should be able to aswell

I am also going to ask an ot question, as i dont feel it deserves a new thread. I was at the tata showroom today inquiring about a Winger, the dealer told me that i wont be able to register it at the RTO as it is only supposed to be a commercial vehicle. Is this true?

    Thanks for the idea anubhavt

It is still VERY MUCH POSSIBLE through a Well Established Tout see the Pictures Above for Reference.
I think You just have to search for a Good Tout .Or Find a connection in The respective authority. I have seen Numbers Being retained.

Infact, I was just about to start a thread for Collecting the Vintage Series Registration Numbers In Delhi.
I quite fancy those and thought why not start collecting, and what Place better to start then GH.
Please if any Delhi resident can snap some Old Numbers like the ones above for me, I would be really grateful.
