      TATA Motors launches their first 5-axle rigid truck - LPT 3723

      While AL today launched their first left axle truck, TML moved one step ahead and launched 5-axle rigid truck. Love competition

      The Tata LPT 3723 is India's first 5-axle rigid truck. With a payload of 25 tonnes (ideal for cement and steel movement), it will radically change transportation economics by reducing the cost/tonne-km.

      It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (154 kW power at 2500 rpm) and mated with a 9-speed gearbox, the first in a rigid truck in India. Twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle, the only truck to have such a technology, reduces tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more manoeuverable than a tractor-trailer. The air-conditioned cabin, ergonomic dashboard and instrument cluster and stylish interior trims give drivers the comfort to cover longer distances at a stretch.

      Er! How exactly do you call it "one step ahead"? Both the trucks are 10x4, both trucks are rigid with 5 axles (2 steerable, 2 powered and 1 liftable tag axles). And, both trucks are called 3723!!

      I'd not call it a step forward, but only neck-to-neck competition.

      Sorry i am not an expert in commercial vehicle but can you confirm this.

      As per my understanding, TML 3723 has 2 axles as lift and AL has 1. Am I right or wrong?

      TML 3723c also has ONE lift axle. The two steerable axles at the front remain planted on the tarmac full time. The two live axles at the rear are not liftable (these axles have 2 tyres on each side). The rear-most tag axle is the lift axle.

      As usual, TATA has inserted a lot of "firsts" in this news-release as well. For some reason, all their releases claim they are the "first" everywhere - sadly though, their competition would've done it long back.

      In this release, they are saying the LPT3723C is the "only truck" to have the 2+2+1 configuration. The Ashok Leyland U-3723 also has the same configuration.

      However TML has launched lift axle long time back and AL has just released one, if I am not wrong u-3723 is the the first model from AL with lift axle

      You are right on that. TML's 4-axle trucks had 1 steerable axle, one lift axle, one powered axle and one tag axle. (I think in some models, the last two axles were powered).

      On the other hand, AL's 4-axle trucks had 2 steerable axles, one powered axle and one tag axle (two powered axles in some models, like in TML).

      The AL's 2-steerable axle version made it more maneuverable, while the Lift axle of the TATA gave it more load pulling capabilities.

      This product, IMHO, is the first from TATA to have two steerable axles (other than their Prima range), while the U-3723 is the first from a Leyland with liftable axle. So, both the trucks have some firsts w.r.t the manufacturer alone.

      I haven't come across any such models till now. TML's Prima 4-axle tippers have both the rear axles powered (TML doesn't have a conventional tipper model with 4 axles). Similarly, AL's 4-axle tippers too have it (8x4 configuration). But no rigid truck - neither from AL nor from TML, nor AMW has both rear axles powered (they have an 8x2 configuration).

      camchennai - could you edit the title of this thread? Tata Motors' 3723c is their first 5-axle rigid truck, and not exactly India's first
