The GH ICE community ended 2011 on a high. Some of the best and most innovative installs that we have ever seen here were done last year. We have had a spectacular start to 2012 as well. A lot of well respected names in the Indian ICE industry are active members. Some of the best ICE products available in India are being launched and showcased right here on GH. I don't see that happening on any other forum right now. 2012 is gonna be massive!
Does anyone remember what this place looked like some time in the middle of 2010? Probably the best discussion we had back then was which was the loudest component set one could get under 6K! cooladitya007 still hasn't found one btw. Or the discussion on Dinesh Sachdev's home made subs. Those were fun times. Over time, ICE maniacs like Mi10 and karanbhatia have taken it to the next level and now we have a community that we can be truly proud of.
The biggest change from a couple of years back is the fact that good audio seems to be within the reach of many of us. Folks who were on a medium level install are moving to the next level. A lot of VFM equipment is available for sale in our classifieds which enables people with entry level budgets to enjoy audio with equipment they could not have afforded earlier.
Growth has brought its usual set of issues. A lot of threads have started looking like war zones. I have to watch out for what I say or don't say in many of the threads and I am sure a lot of us feel the same way. Brand positions are being staked out even in the most harmless of discussions. This is starting to get a little tiring. I wanted to send a message to members from the ICE industry we have here. You guys have a wealth of practical experience and we are happy you are here. The entire community will benefit if your knowledge is shared. If someone installs a competitor's product, don't consider that as a lost sale. Think of it as an opportunity to sell more stuff to that person in the future. Because we all know that once someone upgrades beyond the basic HU-speakers combo, the upgrades are never going to stop. There is enough space here to grow the overall market with some great marketing and knowledge sharing as opposed to getting down and dirty.
Let me get to the dirty bit as well. A member here has been whispering to anyone who will listen that I have a commercial stake in ICE as well. I had a good laugh when I heard that. I have a Director level position in one of the largest companies in the world. I make more in an hour than this person has made in their entire lifetime. I am into car audio because it is a means to enjoy something that I love which is music. An hour long commute can get pretty boring without audio. I am just as happy listening to my favorte music in an iPod or on my laptop or in my cars. If any of you encounter this person, please tell them to shove it up where it belongs.
Now that my little ramble is out of the way, let's get back to ICE-ing.![]()
I don't know what's gonna happen man but I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames
I'm not sure who is to blame for this but the sad reality is that so many of us treat commercial stake as a dirty phrase. I couldn't care less whether you or anybody else has or doesn't have a commercial stake in anything. And having a commercial stake doesn't mean one disses brands where one doesn't have a commercial stake.
Healthy respect for one's competition only fetches you more respect. Those who know Avis car rentals will remember arguably one of the best slogans ever in advertising:
We're number 2 so we try harder!
p.s. yet another random post in the ICE section doesn't mean I'm going to upgrade anything![]()

Mar 2003 Tata Indica V2 LSi 128K km
Jan 2007 Tata Safari 3.0 DiCOR EX 4x4 148K km
Having a commercial stake isn't dirty in itself. It's perfectly legitimate to have a stake. Some of my most trusted advisors in this field are commercial guys and I have a huge amount of respect for them. On the other hand, implying that someone has an undisclosed commercial stake as a means to peddle your own stuff is dirty. Let your products speak for themselves. The rant above was not aimed at anyone with commercial links, but rather at a 'freelance agent'.
Guess we'll have to try harder like Avis.![]()

Yup! That's true and hats off to each one of you for what you guys have managed to turn around this section into in such a short period of time. As an appreciation to the commendable effort by you, Mi10, karanbhatia and all our ICE fans, serial upgraders, refresh the main page and see where the ICE section now shows up now on the Forum Page
Damn! I need to get this mental block of not buying used stuff and lap up the opportunity the next time Nikhil Sharma or karanbhatia or Pr_007 or Mi10 are upgrading
No offense, but we all know where the wars started from
Lmao! I know exactly how you feel. Just because I bought a few speakers and stuff and I'm more involved in ICE these days, I too have been accused by some very senior members in the ICE Section of having a "commercial stake". It's funny how people come up with such stuff given that I've never recommended anyone to buy any products on any threads from the guys I've been linked to have a commercial tie up with.
So I'd say one thing to you, Vijay! Don't worry about these guys. You can't make the world stop talking shit about you! So just relax and do what you enjoy doing and not read much into all these petty talks.
But, having said that, I would like to share one concern I've been noticing a lot on ICE section these days. We at Gearheads don't have any commercial policy against promoting your products. So I request all parties involved to spend energy in promoting their stuff than waste time in trying to take digs at competitors or trying to bring each other products down. When I look at it from a common mans perspective, it looks bad.
And the other disturbing trend I see is, people recommending stuff left, right and centre without even hearing or seeing stuff. That's a recipe for disaster IMO. What I've come to realize is ICE section is very much like the Indian Tuning Scene. Lots of mis-information floating around, everyone seems to have an opinion without any real insight into the technical misgivings. And having faced the wrath of the engine vengine community, I would hate to see a day when members will come here to post "dark side" threads on ICE.
So sincere request to all members to be responsible.
