How to spot FAKE speakers/amps from REAL - Focal, Hertz, Dynaudio, JL Audio, JBL, Alpine and many more with pics.

Before I begin with what made me pick up these speakers here is a statutory warning to all those who are looking at buying Dynaudio products from online stores, E-Bay or other channels. There are ton of fakes doing the rounds. So ALWAYS buy it a from an Authorized Dealer.

A list of members selling fake stuff on E-bay.

This is a list of ebay sellers known to have offered to to be currently offering for sale on ebay fake Dynaudio products.

The difference are so "subtle" that is almost impossible to make out unless one were to keep both the sets side by side and compare them.

The above is mentioned on the Dynaudio website itself. Here is the link.
      Dynaudio - Authentic Fidelity

Initially, I had plans of buying the speakers in the US/UK and have it hand carried by a few friends coming down later this month, but after reading this on their website, it didn't matter how expensive they were here, but I had made up my mind that I'd buy them only from BBW.

So be very careful about what or who you buy from online. I know there are a lot of fakes of Dynaudio, JL Audio, Hertz, JBL, Focal running around.

How to Spot Hertz MILLE fakes...

Summary of key differences between genuine and fake MLK165. I combined all the information about this topic into a single post:

      Crossovers:

Comparison of fake vs genuine. Fakes have 335 J 100V on the large white capacitor and a grey capacitor above the inductor (coiled red wire). Genuine has has 3.3μF 100v on the large white capacitor and a white capacitor above the inductor (fake left, genuine right)

Fakes often have crooked logos (ML CX20), chipped plastic, lines of glue on inductor, dodgy paint:

      Box:
Fakes have low resolution/faded photo of the speakers on the front of the box.

Almost every MLK165 I have seen for sale on ebay has been fake. Often they are being sold by Malaysian sellers (who intentionally hide their location) and sell them for US$200-250.
Always assume they are fake unless they can prove otherwise (by sending photos of crossover etc). Serial numbers can be faked too!

      How to spot FOCAL fakes.

Can you be guaranteed they are the real deal?
Imitation Focal speakers are being sold on-line and in some discount stores in Oz.
Some look convincingly like the real thing, and the vendors vow and promise that these are genuine Focal speakers which come from the Focal factory. Do not buy Focal products on the internet. For example, the 165V1 currently advertised in Hong Kong on eBay for about $100 are definitely fakes. We purchased and tested a set, they look great and sound awful.
Even if you find a genuine set somewhere you will have no warranty because Focal warranty does not apply to speakers trans-shipped between countries. Australian dealers are listed on the Focal Dealers page of this website. They have been trained to provide advice and installation skills to support our products.Buy genuine, buy from an Australian dealer and get what you pay for.
Below is a gallery of images comparing genuine and imitation speakers. The packaging and general appearance is so close to the original that you would have to do a direct comparison with a genuine set to see the differences.
On the surface these speakers may appear to be the real deal, however there is a number of areas where cheap 'fakes' will fall short..... the biggest being sound but here is a few other ways to spot a fake.

Yes the fakes even have serial numbers, but they are often misaligned.

Poorly glued cones are visible from the underside.

Magnets are also poorly glued. Don't get ripped off! You only get what you pay for and when you the best only buy products from respected local specialists.

This amp (MRV F304) is a very limited edition custom made model. It was specially built only for me, hence you'll not able to find another similar model
Google it! I'm sure you'll not find any info on this amp other than this thread itself.

And, I have a bill too with warranty on it.

I'm sure guys would envy me! The red colour is actually anodised red copper(very rare metal, you see) and the shiny part is polished chromium and the "/////Alpine" badge you see is is made up Titanium-Platinum Alloy. Its the exclusivity of this amp makes it Alternator SQ heaven.

Sad part is its not with me, anymore. I was lucky to own it for a time but wasn't eligible for a lifetime.
