It does say after lengthy drive on high loads. This does not apply to us immortals who use a car to move from A to B. Long term damage, some might say but my 15 year old car has passed the 305,000 km marks and the engine still has not been opened and still on the original factory turbo.
My instruction manual too say that after long drives with heavy loads, idle a few minutes before switching off but how often do we drive like that? On my trip to Romania a year ago I drove about 3000 km in 36 hours and there was no need to idle every time I stopped to fill up or take short rests.
When I turn off at the exit from the motorway, my engine speed is low and the few hundred meters of rolling into the gas station gives ample time for the turbo to stop and cool down.
