It would be refurbed most probably with "new" bearings, and I can't even check before buying.

its either that or the whine. or you could spend some time finding out who the OEM manufacturer is and get bearings directly from them. no pain, no gain. you want it quick, buy a new one. you want it cheap, then spend some time.

Get the alternator serviced at any of their authorized service centers listen in the below link

Oh no! Their service center is so close to my place that I hate myself for having not searched around before getting the job done. Thanks man, let me see if it works out well.

Just got off the phone with the guy, he seems pretty confident and has asked me to bring the car and get the bearings changed with genuine Denso spares. He is also going to give me a warranty for the job done. Seems like a fair deal and I hope everything goes well.

Guys, This is what I would have done. Got the bearings removed from the alternator and taken it to a SKF or FAG or any reputed bearing store. Bearings are identifiable by their numbers. If a sealed bearing is used, one can still open up the seal from one side and fill in with some extra gease and replace the rubber seal. FIt back the alternator and the job is done. Alternator bearings are actually small sized ball bearings and might be common with any of the motor cycle wheel bearings too. Everything will be fine if only the number matches, and as everyone knows, one main source of profit for Authorized service centres are from the sale of such spares. No wonder if your jaws drop down after making a price comparison for 2 similar bearings, but one at the bearings dealer & one at the Authorized service centre.
