World superbike championship to enter India in 2013

Across the world, Formula1 racing circuits struggle to get into profitability as they need to explore various other motorsport activities on the track to stay in the black. Similar concerns were raised last year in India, where the Buddh International Circuit(BIC) hosted the country’s first ever Formula1 race, a race which saw good turn out. Ever since, the Buddh International Circuit has tied up with Mercedes Benz for a racing academy and has also played host to supercar clubs as well automakers. The latest development is that the BIC could host one round of the World SuperBike Championship(WSBK) in 2013.

Once that happens, the Buddh International Circuit(BIC) could slowly move into profitability. Over the next few years, expect more racing rounds to be held at Buddh International Circuit as there has been come talk about MotoGP, the world’s premier FIA backed motorcycle racing series also making it to Indian shores. This apart, the World Touring Car Championship is another racing series that could be held at the BIC in the coming years. Meanwhile, this is what Maurizio Flammini, President of Infront Motor Sports: The promoters of the WSBK, had to say about the championship’s Indian foray,

We can expect the first World Superbike race to take place in 2013. In the Asia-Oceania area, with Australia and Indonesia joining the fold, we are very keen on adding India to the calendar. Now, we cover almost the entire region. We are always interested in expanding the calendar, but we do not increase the workload of the teams. Three races in such important nations, including the two most important Asian markets, are a great achievement for our championship. The organizers (Jaypee Group) did a great job in making the inaugural F1 race a thundering success. Two factors influenced our decision. First the F1 success and then the way the race was organized. I am sure it will attract other important international motorsport series to India.
