The Dark Knight Visits The Tibetans

This trip has been a long time coming. Planned and Cancelled more times than I can remember, it finally took place this Sunday.

Agenda - Visit the Tibetan Settlement at Bylakuppe and if possible other places nearby and Reach Bangalore by night fall.

The Car was tanked up and air checked at Shell Fri Night and all set to leave on Saturday. But Come Saturday Morning, we all woke up only around 6am having forgot to set the alarm. So Finally decided to leave next day and my Bro took the car out to some other engagement.

Finally Sunday all woke up and we left home at 5:45AM without much trouble with me at the wheel. Quite a bit of traffic on Bangalore roads already, but navigated it and the horrible pothole filled Mysore road to reach Shell only to find it still not open. Finally cleared Kengeri and the roads were free. Pulled into the same bunk hrag pulled in during the Ooty drive and filled up a bit more petrol. Finally we were off. Good Roads, nice weather, perfect for driving.

Reached Kadambam restaurant and stopped for Breakfast. My Bro took the wheel from there, and we were away again. It was light enough and I took some pics of the road.

PS: The Dark Knight is what I have named my car

Soon we were past Mandya and approaching Srirangapatna. After a discussion, we decided to take the diversion after Srirangapatna and take the KRS road to Hunsur. We thought it might be a nice village road and we would like driving on it. Right after taking this road, we had to stop for a train crossing. We decided to have tender coconut water. The train passed and the gates opened, but we were still not done with our work. As we were there, quite a few heavy duty trucks passed by on that small road incl. a long trailer truck. Soon we were away on that road. Nice Grenery it was, but the road left a lot to be desired. Very Bumpy and after the deviation to KRS, lot of potholes. Driving quite slowly, we finally reached the Mysore - Hunsur road. This was a very nice smooth 4 - laner and we speeded up again. The road is 4 lanes all the way till the point where a road goes to Belur and Hassan. Thereafter, it becomes 2 lane, but still very good. The traffic was sp**** throughout and we were quickly passing through towns. Lots of speed breakers, but signboards before each one and well marked. Thanks for that.

We reached Byalukuppe just affter 11AM. Not bad. Early starts are good. You start seeing them Monks and others right away. An arch welcomes you to the settlement. Small Road leads to the settlements. There are totally 7 camps and the Golden Temple is in the 4th Camp. There are sign boards to point you in the right direction. You come across lot of autos with 4 monks in them. They keep going to and fro between the camps and shops.

Nice Quiet place and you find them everywhere. Signs in Tibetan language, they far outnumber us. We reached before huge crowds came in and so we had a leisurely look. Quiet and Peaceful place.

The Temple seemed closed, and most of the crowd were going to this Padmasambhava Buddhist Vihara next door. So we also headed that way.Click image for larger version.

We entered through a door of beads. Not a lot of crowd and it was silent. All the walls inside were filled with paintings. There were gongs inside also. (Thats the name for them I think)Click image for larger version.

But what strikes you the moment you enter the Vihara are not these paintings or gongs. Rather this.Click image for larger version.

Just as we were leaving in came a huge group of silly giggling school/college girls making a hue amount of noise. All the serenity just went for a toss.

There was a nice Garden behind this Vihara. A couple of pics of the Garden.Click image for larger version.
