      Seat Height Increase for Grande

      History -

My wifey dear drives Grande or rather will put it this way, i let her drive Grande very very very occasionally, something like a late night after dinner drive, where there is no traffic or a soul on road (Men will always be Men, Eh)

But, Women too have their way, ain't it?

Then we Men have to run from pillar to post...

On one such day, i had to give my wife's Zen for service, since it also had few minor scratches here and there i asked the MASS guys to take additional days and clean those off as well, so all in all the Zen was not available for 3days, and it got a bit difficult for wifey to travel...

Day1 she returns from office really angry, and says.. 'Grande is at home since you are using the Bull, i will take it to office till Zen is back..'

Me says.. 'Err, Ahh, Hmm... yes, good suggestion, but its very difficult for you to...

She cuts Me off and says.. 'sheesh, but the seat is very low for me..'

Me says to self.. 'phew thank god before i could blabber something she changed her mind'

She says.. 'Get the seat height increased, in case such requirement comes up the next time i too can use the Grande...'

Its been about 4 months since that discussion, but you know how women folks never forget what they say (still, is a mystery)...

This week i got a final ultimatum from wifey dear... either i go and get the seat height of Grande increased or she will do it herself, needless to say she is capable of doing that.

Soo friends lion becomes a cat at home, and the one lurking at everyone's heart goes back to sleep (refer my signature).

P.S. Before any of you laugh at me, consider this..

Soo, what do you all suggest is the best way possible considering...

      1. This model does not have the seat height adjustment
      2. Seat Cushions are ruled out, because i suggested this and the idea was thrown out of the window
      3. The Seats in Grande are pretty short, so considering her height i will need to increase at least 3 to 4 inches from the base
      4. What happens to Lumbar support in such a case, i don't really want the after market monkeys to mess up the mechanism in anyway
      5. To be honest i would also love the commanding position from where i can have a complete view of the bonnet starting from the windshield washer outlet, but the existing seat position is very comfortable, even a drive of 800+kms i don't feel the discomfort, so would like to maintain that part
      6. Can i add some metal piece or some bushes to the body from where seat mechanism is fitted, this way i can maintain the natural seating position too

The only way I can think of is to replace your existing seat with the seat from GX variant, because it will come with the built in mechanism and will fit perfectly into the existing area.

junaid If the seats in the grande are anything like the ones on the safari, this should be a fairly easy task.

On the safari the seat mounting is divided into two parts.

      1. Two metal brackets that bolt onto the floor.
2.The seat itself which has allen bolts going through the railing and screwing into the two metal brackets.

To increase seat height what you would need to do is :-

1.Remove the seat from the two metal brackets.
2.Get 2 pieces of 1.5 inch od square tubing ( 15 inches long IIRC).
3.Drill holes in the tubing so they match up with the ones on the bottom metal bracket.( when you make a through hole, you will have to increase the hole size on the top so that you can drop in the original allen bolt.
      4. Now mark positions for holes for your seat rails.
      5. Drill holes and tap them.
      6. Buy new bolts and screw the seat rails to the square tubing.

My instructions may seem complicated, but once you remove the seat and have the materials with you, it will all make perfect sense.

We did this for a friends safari at a welder's shop so that we would have access to labour and tools, took approx 30 min per side to do, cost Rs 500 including material and labour.

Actually, i have not see what the mechanism is underneath the seat, your suggestion is fool proof though, and worth a try...

from what i have seen the entire seat is held with 4 bolts from each corner, what are the -ves if i add some metal piece beneath them and tighten the bolts back to increase the height?

But is this method safe? junaid needs to increase around 3-4 inches, won't that be too much ?
For an inch or two I guess this method would be fool proof, but for anything higher, won't the seat become unstable? the bolts would not be able to hold it through the tube unless you use a solid bar instead of the tube and drill thorugh the car base for extra rigidity?

on a more serious note.. budget kya hai?? if you increase the height with metal pieces and bolts however that would work.. how do you plan to get the seat back down the way you drive?

wait.. i just figured it out..

      after wife drives the vehicle

      1. remove tool box..
      2. remove bolt
      3. remove seat
      4. remove metal inserts
      5. put seat back on
      6. tighten bolts

read in reverse manner everytime wife wants to drive..

PM'ed you my number.. call me.

I believe you are talking about the 4 bolts on the floor. The reason we didnt choose these as our starting point was that the floor was not absolutely flat over there and it would involve carpet cutting etc and the mod would be visible.

Even I dont think it is advisable to use this method for 4 inches, the 1.5 inch mod that I did seems to be as sturdy as the oem mount.

Why don't you look around the second hand market for some old tata seats with height adjustment that could fit your car?
