Volvo plans to set up local assembly unit

Swedish automaker Volvo, which has carved out a niche for itself in the premium bus segment but didn't do too well with its car brand, is now planning to focus on the luxury car market, and even toying with the idea of setting up local assembly operations.

Volvo Auto India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volvo Car Group owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group of China, is preparing a longterm strategy for India to gain more volumes in the 30,000 units a year luxury car market.

"We are competing against stronger German rivals who have put up a huge distribution network that's aided by local plants to roll out cars at lower taxes. But we have to import cars by paying higher taxes. So, it'll make sense to assemble our cars locally to pass on the benefits to our customers and increase our share in the Indian market," said Volvo Auto India MD Tomas Ernberg.

But the Swedish parent company is yet to clear any assembly facility in India and has not finalised any fresh investment plans so far. Tomas didn't give any kind of time frame for selecting a location for the planned local assembly unit in India and said that headquarters would take a call in due course.

Volvo was among the first to enter India in 2006, much before many of its global rivals like BMW and Audi, but failed to capitalise on its first-mover advantage. It sold just 812 cars in 2012 while BMW sold 9,375 units and Audi, the last to enter India, sold an impressive 9,003 vehicles the same year, 63% sales growth over 2011. Auto experts say that the Swedish car maker would continue to face challenges in the Indian market. "There's stiff competition in the luxury car space. BMW leads the global luxury car market as well the India market. Same is the story with Audi and Mercedes Benz in the pecking order. Volvo has not gained in any markets or country so far and a resource-constrained company may not have an easy run in India either," said a Delhi-based auto analyst working with an MNC consultancy.

It is believed that the changes in the global ownership may have somewhat upset its Indian growth plans: the ownership changed from Volvo AG to Ford Motor till the Chinese took over the enterprise in 2010. Backed by an Asian management, Volvo now plans to revamp its car offerings and also add a new authentic brand experience for customers. "We are realigning our dealership network as well as introducing new products with smaller and fuel-efficient engines," added Ernberg.

Currently, Volvo has seven showrooms in India and would open three more in Delhi, Bangalore and Gurgaon this year. It also plans to introduce the V40 Cross Country in the Indian market that's expected to be priced close to the entry-level models from the German luxury carmakers.

The V40 Cross Country will be imported and deliveries of the car are likely to begin by May this year.

The question is with Volvo owned by the Chinese and Land Rover owned by Tata, will localization be able to produce anything vaguely similar to what these brands stood for?
Drive it like you stole it and Detail it like you own it.

the good part about both these acquisitions is that the Ethos of both companies stays intact. the new owners have left the original team untouched.

What is your point about localization?

      Volvo to introduce UD buses.

Volvo Group today announced the introduction of the UD bus range, developed specifically for growth markets all over the world.

New plant going to come in Karnataka, between Hoskote and Kolar.

Company officials said after its introduction in India, additional growth markets would follow in the coming years.

In India, UD buses aims to develop and lead the value segment, they added.

"India is growing, even though we have seen some trouble in last year and a half or two years,

we certainly had good growth in the Indian economy over the last 10 to 12 years, with this growth comes in new aspirations,

moving middle class and the need for more sustainable transport solutions which are better and smarter,"

Volvo Bus Corporation Senior Vice President - Region International Akash Passey told reporters here.

Stating that UD bus brand will expand Volvo group's customer base, improve competitiveness and capture growth opportunity in India,

he said: "...The bus range will include both city buses and coaches."

The new UD bus range will be developed by leveraging Volvo group's global engineering network in combination with its heritage of Japanese

      craftsmanship and reliability.

Volvo said production of UD buses will start here in 2014. The first buses will reach customers later this year.

Besides serving the domestic Indian market, the UD bus plant in India would also serve as an export hub for the future.

Stating that UD buses will operate under Volvo Buses India, Passey said "for the backup industrial footprint,

as we see a big opportunity in this growing second largest market in the world for both premier segment and value segment,

we see essentially exclusive needs of industrial system for both of them....

We are well on our way to have a new facility ready by quarter 3 this year for manufacturing UD buses."

This would be done with a partner SMK, part of Prakash Roadlines group, he said, adding they are building the facility for Volvo

for UD buses and that will be ready by Q3 this year.

On the nature of the JV, he said SMK was making the investment, while Volvo would have minority stake of about 15 per cent.

Asked about investment, he did not give a breakup, saying that including the investment of SMK and that of Volvo

into the whole system and value chain and technology preparation, it would overall be about Rs 125 crore.

"The plant would be in Karnataka.... More towards Kolar, between Hoskote and Kolar," he said.

On production capacity, he said "the aim for UD buses is a volume of 2,000 to 2,500 buses in the coming years.

Initial capacity will be of about 500 buses a year.
