Question "EVOLUTION OF ICE" in my Swift

      January 12 2009

Delivered the car along with some basic ICE system. Equipments are :-
      Head Unit - Sony CDX-GT470U
Speakers - JBL GT5-652 6" coaxial on all four doors

First time in my life I'm listening to a JBL speakers. It sounds really sweet and clean compared to some normal pioneer and sony speakers. Enjoyed the music for next 3 months. The main problems in that setup was door pad vibration on high volumes and for some hip hop tracks. This vibration happens only when I switched on Loudness setting in the HU. But I've to do this all time bcoz without Loudness ON it sounds very dull. At that time need of an amp and a sub woofer came in mind.

March 2009 - First Upgrade to the ICE.

Went to Car Shoppy, Trivandrum for installing sub woofer and amp. The owner suggested 10" bass tube and a two channel amp and he insisted me to install a component speaker also in front (at that time I don't know anything about a component speaker). Installed the following components :-

Component Speaker - Polk Audio db6501 (100w rms @ 4 ohm) (Owner buy back my 3 months old front jbl coaxials)
      JBL 10" bass tube - CS1004T 125w rms @ 4 ohm
Amplifier - JBL GT5-S422 (150W rms @ 4 ohm on bridging two channel)
      8 Gauge Amplifier Kit - Soundstream SK-08

After installation, I started the car, WOW! I must say - Its not the music but the engine sound . The engine sound is more audible inside the cabin because the installation was done by a hindiwalla guy and he made two holes in the firewall to pass through the 8 gauge power cable and didn't closed the firewall bush properly on the hole used .

And about the music now my door pad vibration gone . I can switch off loudness now. Bass section is handled by the JBL bass tube very well. Overall sound is good but the polks highs where too high. The sound stage was like treble from the dashboard, bass from the trunk and some instruments sound here and there from all four doors (just like a 5.1 Dolby digital system ). But I enjoyed it for another 4 months. Its music (or bass) everywhere both inside and outside the car  . Its tolerable for front seat passengers in this type of setup, but for rear passengers it was something like hitting a 50 kg cement pack to their back .

I always played the following two tracks to demo the system to my friends.

      1. Michael Jackson - Thriller (its fun to hear the door closing sound at end of the track)
      2. Michael Jackson - Black or white

One thing I learned never use a bass tube in a hatchback or small cars and also its not good for a long period of listening music .

      Third Upgrade

While I enjoying the bass tube sound  , I read a lot from different car audio forums and other forums. Learned basic and advanced car audio installations. Heard a lot of technical terms like SQ, SPL, Sealed Box , Ported Box, Distribution Block, Capacitor, Component, Coaxial, Mono bloc etc etc. Goes through different reviews written by different people and heard a lot of names like Hertz, Rainbow, DLS, Steg, Audison, Noise Kill, Dynamat, Illusion Audio, Image Dynamics, Tru Tech, Kicker, Monster etc etc and of course the terms like Emperor, Zuheimi, Hydrashok, Speedzak, iPlay, greenhorn, B&T, Yeti, Gunbir, LBM and some 50 or 60 year old uncle etc etc. Thats a whole lot of reading done and still reading .

After those reading ICE bug really caught me very well . So I decided to buy a 4 channel amp and get rid of bass tube and add a new sub woofer in a sealed box.

But there is a problem exist, its nothing but my Head Unit. It has only one pre out. In order to connect 4 channel amp a minimum of 2 pre out (Front + Rear/Subwoofer) is needed. I went back to previous shop again purchased the following things:-

      Alpine MRP-F600 V-power Series - 100w rms @ 4 ohm and 300W rms @ 4 ohm bridged.
(I choose my gearhead name as v_power only because of this amp)
4 gauge Amp Kit - Sound Quest SQK4
4 gauge to 8 gauge Fused power distribution block
      3 meter sub woofer cable
Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P6050UB (Sold My Old Sony HU to my friend)
Sub woofer - Didn't purchase because I didn't get a good deal for both bass tube and 2 channel Amp so decided to keep them for a while.

Everything is purchased but didn't installed it from there due to my previous experience with hindiwalla guy . So found some mallu installers at Kazhakkuttom, trivandrum (Royal Cars, Opposite to Sarathi Motors). This time the installed guy in this shop sealed the firewall hole (used for routing 4 gauge power cable) properly. Now the engine sound inside the cabin reduced a lot .

I used both amps. Front two channels connected to Component speakers and Rear two channels bridged to connect Bass tube. The other two channel amp is used to power the rear door speakers. Two amps were mounted on side wall of hatch area. Amp mounting wooden boards where build by Kelachandra Engineering Works, Trivandrum (inside Veli Industrial area owned by Santhosh - Sharleo Home theater fame). And the installation pictures here.

After the installation one thing noticed, I can hear lot of music never heard before even on low volumes and bass tube sounds smooth on alpine amp. Another thing I have to say is my old Sony HU sounds a lot better than this pioneer HU (I know this will not agreed by some others, but I feel so ;-) ).

Used this setup for a while and went back to the old shop for exchanging bass tube. Owner agreed to buy back bass tube for a sub woofer. So purchased JBL GT5-S12 12" sub woofer (300w rms). I went to Santhosh's place again to build a 1 cubic feet sealed box for the sub. He made the sub box solid with banana plug connectors. Pictures of subwoofer following...

WOW after installing, its a different feeling than before . There is no boom boom headache like bass tube. Its a different sound (read as sounds good) but still loud (Please note that i didn't change the amplifier gain setting used for bass tube. In order to re tune I need to remove the amp and remount it so leave it like that ).

"EVOLUTION OF ICE" in my Swift

Last Upgrade (Current Last next upgrade will happen soon )

This happened on January 2nd 2010. I got an unexpected travel to Cochin. The best chance to visit Emperor and The Man of Install "Zuheimi". Some damping and changing front components to Rainbow SLX 265 Deluxe and reinstall everything was in my mind for a while and I got only one day for that (And I was in a limited budget). I auditioned one of Zuheimi's installation before. Its a hertzified swift - Hertz energy series components and coaxials, Hertz energy subwoofer, Alpine MRV amplifier and Alpine 9881 Head Unit (the owner is a gearhead member too). God it sounds really good and that sub woofer blend perfectly with the components. I was very much impressed by that installation and tuning .

Reached Emperor at 10:30 Am. Wow!!! they got a huge collection of car accessories in their showroom . After checking the components in the showroom, then I go to their workshop and wait for Zuheimi. 11 AM Zuheimi reached there in a madly modded Getz.

I told him about my needs and my maximum budget. He examined the current setup and after a lot of thinking he said "This budget is not sufficient enough for these works, everything should be reinstall and I've a fixed charge for these kind of installation. without that charge I'll not do anything". I heard about this charge before so that word doesn't surprised me at all. Then I asked Zuheimi about his suggestion for that budget.

Again thinking and he said: "You don't need to change this component speaker its a good speaker, If you want to change anything in this setup, then the first thing to go is this head unit. You will not get any benefit by adding rainbow components by keeping this HU. So what we can do is reinstall everything, damp four doors and hatch door then you hear the difference"

I said OK (because I trust him and I know that I will not disappointed by his installation and tuning)

Installation started from 11:45 Am and everything including tuning finished before 6:00 PM . So the changes done are two amps where remounted under front passenger seats, all speaker cables replaced, all RCA cables replaced by a good one (don't know which brand is it), added a speaker terminal for sub woofer at hatch area, Front two door full damped without door pad damping (don't know which material used, it looks like Dynamat), rear door inner part damped, hatch door full damped and tweeters mounted on A pillar and all door speakers reinstalled. I was not there at the time of installation so didn't take all picture. Managed to take some random installation pic including damping during a small visit at afternoon time. At that time lot of other cars also there for small installations.

When I reached at 6:00 PM everything is over. We both sit into the car. Zuheimi played his usual demo cds (Chris rea, Keb Mo, etc and some mallu songs). I was amazed that its sound totally different . No speakers were changed only thing added are damping. About the sound - Now no one will notice that I have a sub woofer in my car 8-) . All sounds are coming from the dashboard, mid bass improved a lot, Tweeter harness was controlled maximum (but still bright bcoz its a polk audio tweeter ). Even rear passengers don't feel the presence of sub woofer. Z insisted me to change the Pioneer HU to any Alpine model then the sound will improve even better. Overall I'm very much satisfied with the sound . 18+ years of experience in car audio field help Zuheimi to change my ICE sound like this . I'm thanking Z for making my ICE system sounds better and also thanking that three talented workers under him. Truly professional work and I recommend this place for every ICE lovers :handgestures-thumbup: .

This is one hell of a story! Even though I dont think too much about ICE, I read the whole thing. Nicely written, and of course, enjoy the music!
