Exhaust Turbo Manifold Coating & EGT Installation

Have decided to start the following work on my diesel Hyundai Verna / ( Accent ) 2008

1)Coat the turbo manifold with Techline Turbo X Coating - Techline Exhaust System Coatings
2)Install EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) probe & controller from Auber Instruments
Digital EGT Pyrometer with voltage output - Digital EGT Thermometer/Pyrometer with analog output [SYL-1812RA]
EGT Sealed-tip Probe - EGT Probe, Sealed Tip [TC-KEGTS]

Waiting to see how this goes. I am planning to install a EGT sensor and display in my Cruze too. But since the exhaust manifold sits on the firewall side, it's going to a PITA to get access to it to weld a hole for the sensor. There is very little room there.

Also eapen, are you planning to run the EGT probe permanently or just when you need it?

On top of the Turbo inlet there is a threaded stud to hold the metal heat shield plate - this location will serve as the EGT mounting location. I ordered the smallest mount M8x1 which incidentally matched in diameter to the nut pattern.

Though the nut diameter matched, the pitch of the thread was slightly different. Hence it had to be re-threaded using a hand threading tool.

It is a pain to work on Hyundai vehicles since the Turbo faces the firewall. Un-mounting the manifold & turbo assembly involves lot of physical work. Even the passenger side tyre had be removed to gain better access!

HHhhmmm! That sounds like a nice idea. Maybe one of these days joeking, you and myself can meet up to see what can be done on the Cruze.

EGT probe installation for pre-turbo location with removing the manifold could prove disastrous. Small bits of metal flying into a VGT / VNT turbo could damage the vanes.

Remember this is for Turbo Inlet Temperature monitoring and not Outlet.

The Techline Turbo X is designed to blanket / contain the heat within the manifold & designed to withstand upto 1000 d centigrade.

Prior to doing the Techline Turbo X coating the manifold has to be pre-prepared by blasting. They specifically instruct not to use sand or glass bead for cleaning. Hence had to to take it Peenya industrial area for aluminum bead shot blasting. Below is the blasted manifold - with all rust gone shiny grey in colour.

Initially I had the idea for coating the turbine side of VGT turbo also, but later dropped the idea since excess heat contained within the turbine housing could damage the VGT mechanism.

The probe will be permanently installed. The idea is to integrate with a rail pressure diesel tuning box which has 0-5v input for fueling control. High Exhaust temperature = High output voltage from the EGT controller. On high voltage say 4v the tuning box will switch to a conservative map.

If one wishes to install EGT probe permanently in Diesel it should be of the sealed type.

Exposed tip probe give accurate & fast readings than sealed tips but could prove unreliable when the tip gets blocked with soot. Sealed tips support higher exhaust temperature.

      Max temp in Celsius -
      Exposed tip - 1000 d
      Sealed tip - 1100 d

eapen, I will be very interested in seeing how the coating holds up to the elements. recently attempted a half assed job on my header using VHT Flameproof on a poorly prepared surface [sandpaper by hand] and it began to flake off almost instantly. if yours holds up well, then I already know what I am doing next time I come to Bangalore.

Does VHT Flameproof VHT FlameProof Coating offer thermal blanketing ? My idea is to contain the heat inside the manifold allowing the turbo to spool better.

Techline Turbo X claims to " reduce under hood temperatures, reduce exhaust manifold surface temperatures ".
