KTM Duke 200 - The Orange Puppy

      Prologue

I've always preferred bike over a car until mid 2009.
I've always used to come back late from office during that time 12-1am

After 2 close calls with drunk morons. (thanks to 3 TASMAC shops on that road)
I have not touched the bike for anything more than 3-4 km rides that too only during day.

So why back to bikes ?
Mostly due to the bike crazy flat mates I had during the last few month I was in Chennai.

I was lucky enough to ride some fairly awesome machines during that time.
Gixxer, Bking, FZ6 and the cool Harley 48

Had too many track days and to see these chaps ride was enough motivation.

It was during that time I saw the KTM Duke 200 that too one of the first bikes to hit the road.
It was instant wow moment. I always had a soft spot for Naked Street fighters.

To be honest I never though I'd get another bike so soon.
I did know I'll get a bike down the lane, something like the Harley. Its hard not to fall in love with that.
Obviously money is the only issue for not getting one, but some day I will.

Thanks to the permanently gridlocked Bangalore traffic the decision was easy to get a bike.
Me being the Yamaha fan should have got something from them.

They are still waiting (I don't know for what) to launch some interesting and fairly powerful bikes.
So it all boiled down to KTM Duke.

Something that will have the fun factor as my Rx-Z

So got myself this on Sep 15, 2012

+ The KTM bloodline (To be brutally honest its been watered down to ridiculous levels by "hamara" Baja)
      + Rev friendly engine
+ Suspension (Some say its hard, for me its just right)
+ Headlight (can safely do 90-100 at night)
      + Handling

      Dislikes

      - Too many gears
      - Seat is hard for long rides
      - No auto cancel for indicator (even Pulsar 150 has them)
      - Vibrations at higher revs
      - No center stand (especially annoying for detailing freaks like me, it a pain to clean the alloys and tyres)
      - Stupid rear brake lever

Saw some 80-100 in today's KTM orange day at Ezone. Awesome it was. I am completely in love with these machines. Waiting for the 300series to come out

      Booking and Delivery

In Bangalore there is only one choice the showroom at Indiranagar.
Little did I know what lay ahead.

Went there on 8th and gave a Cheque for 1L as I was not planning to take a loan.
Rest I told will be paid before Wednesday.

      OTR 1.45L

There was no demo bike available when I went.
Most of the staff at the Showroom does't do justice to the brand(s)

You need people who can talk and really handle customers especially when you are trying to sell premium products (Yes they have the Ninja 650 in that place)

Anyway I was told 4-5 working days to get the bike since it was a cash purchase.
They also said for loan it will take 10days.

This kinda shows the lazy attitude of the chaps there.
I was gonna take delivery on a Saturday so 1 week was fine for me.

My friend paid the remaining amount for me on Tuesday Sep 11th and selected the bike.

Delivery time committed was 2:30pm on Saturday.
I requested to make that 12 noon this was agreed but they were not happy.
I really don't understand as the request was made 4 days in advance.

I was there on Saturday to my surprise the delivery has to be taken from the Baja showroom near the flyover.
The attitude of the folks there are disgusting.

I was early to arrive around 11:20
To my surprise the bike was not even washed.

I had no option but to exchange some words with the chap who handled my booking.
I could understand he was to some extend helpless.

      The wash just name-sake.
The bike was dripping wet and with dirt and visible water stains on the paint.
I was irritated and really disappointed.

Since I was there with my wife and kid I just wanted to take the bike and go.

This is the first time in my life where the delivery experience of a new bike/car was this pathetic.

I would be sending a detailed feedback to KTM.
I'm delaying that as I've paid some money to get the number I wanted to the chaps in that place.

Forget handing over the key in our India style after getting up (this was not done)
The so called demo explaining stuff was again 1 min affair, was told not to exceed 60km/hr and that was about it. (this is not accurate btw)

Forget all that was not even told to sit or even offered a cup of water/tea/coffee.

Khivraj motors Bangalore, you guys suck big time.
I've had excellent service from Khivraj Chennai when I went for Test driving the Dezire for my Bro.

      This was not over yet...!
They did't have the temp registration papers, nor they knew the number.
The chap told you can ride home with the bike.

At that time I refused to take the bike unless papers are given as I don't fancy getting stopped by a cop and explaining the whole story.

Few calls later he got a registration number and promised that a scanned copy will be sent to my email by evening. (which he did)

Anyway I was given a dirty bike with no registration papers.

So there that was the delivery.

      Sorry I could't come mate.
Did't get enough sleep the day before, after the 300kms ride yesterday wanted to sleep.

      Ownership

At this point of time this would be rather incomplete as I'm yet to complete 1st service.

      Anyway...

For a bike which costs 1.45L you get lot of attention.
People often mistake it for something rather big.

As per the Owners Manual the rev limit is 7500rpm for the first 1000kms.
There is a shift light what flashed once you are at 5k rpm (this can be adjusted using the Multi Function Display)
The light becomes solid at 7.5k rpm.

Bike feels pretty agile and nimble.
136 kg weight is a boon for 'weight' challenged folks like me
I've read in reviews that bike required more dedication from the rider, I find it misleading.
Its pretty easy on the rider and is compliant with a sporty yet hooligan overtone.

You do feel the mid-corner bumps but that does't mean you will need to be Valentino to control the bike.

Its entertaining especially on twisty bits of tarmac.

Often you are mistaken for a boy racer and the odd Yamaha and Pulsar boys wanna race you at signals.
Even with the rpm limit in place its pretty satisfying to get away first

And for the Mileage kya hai folks

First tank up 263 kms 6.49 Ltrs

      40.5 Km/Ltr

Second figures still waiting as I tanked up in-between for my ride yesterday.

      Was good.
No scope for a travel log just a short ride

congrats on your purchase, hope you many troubles free journey's and miles on your steed

started to see quite a few of these on the road in delhi these days, and in only one of instances the pillion seat was occupied, it was hilarious because as it is the pillion seat is kind of high and upright and this pillion was accentuating his position by being at right angles to the seat, and the rider by crouching a bit too much, 'crouching rider, upright dragon'
