      Fortunate to "tell the tale"

I was gripping the steering wheel but I realized the car, for the first time in the 50 K Km plus drive had lost the control of my Innova and was sliding out from my control….

A series of thoughts flashed in my mind in a jiffy.

Friends I and my wife are alive to tell this tale.

We escaped from what would have resulted in a major mishap two weeks back during our trip from Coimbatore to Perinthalmanna ( to my father’s place).

It was drizzling continuously after Palakkad and the traffic was mediocre. The time was around 9.30 pm. It was some 25 kms from Palakkad on the Palakkad Calicut NH 213. The visibility was not very clear but nothing much to complaint. Suddenly I felt the front left wheel got into a dip (the fall was smooth and not felt like a pothole), realizing it I just turned it slightly right (That’s what I thought!!!).

The series of things that happened after that is still fresh in my mind. To my utter surprise the car swerved to right and by intuition I slammed the brakes and the car started sliding towards the other end of the road. NH 213 is a single lane and very narrow when it nears Palakkad. I could clearly see a white car passing the way my car was sliding to and a vehicle ( I don’t remember what it was) just behind that. Believe it, the car just slid in between these two vehicles crossing the entire breadth of the road neat without even a scratch to mark the event.

I was in all senses and even my wife maintained composure. A biker who was behind me (he happened to be a local chap) came and enquired whether we were fine.
He saw the entire event live behind as he was just behind us and narrated me the event.

      What happened?
The road was slightly turning right and descending. As it was raining and I was slightly blinded by the lights of oncoming traffic and missed and continued driving straignt and ran out of the road. As there was a considerable level difference between the road and the ground, this is when I felt the left front tyre fell into a dip and I turned to right. The biker told that the car tipped on the right wheels and was sliding on two wheels to the right. I was like……..

I never realized that the car was sliding on two wheels.

I recovered fast, got out of the vehicle and to my wife’s dismay checked up the car for any scars on the car

Spend some time with the biker and his friend and he told he feared the car will topple over.
After some 5 minutes started driving again and then,

My wife asked, didn’t you see the big tree on the TURN???

I still have no clue that there was a tree on that turn!!!!

Friends this was a real eye opener and as an auto enthusiast I felt it is my duty to share this on an open forum.

      • Drive slow and be extra cautious while driving in the rains

      • Always wear seatbelts.

      • Change your tyres well in advance before waiting for it to “SHOW” it last legs

      • Change your tyres before the rains, your tyres can behave very different during rains ( Slicks hold better grip in summers but cannot displace water in the rains), I was running on just 7 K Km old Hankooks which has good road hodling-ability.

      • Heavier the car more the momentum you are carrying

      • UVs are more difficult to hold back on a slide

      • Maintain recommended air pressure

      • Your car can become a wild behemoth difficult to tame and throw up nasty surprises if slightly unsettled from normal.

      • And from the incident I strongly believe that all cars have a sweet spot when elicited can bring out the monster inside it.

      Drive safe, wear seat belts.

Wow!! Seems like you had a very close shave... Thank goodness nothing happened . I really am not fond of driving during the night when it rains...

Silver Knight: First of all thank God nothing happened.

I liked the points u have shared for safe driving. Experiences like these are real eye openers.

I have had a similiar experience on a Goa trip 8 years back. I was driving a Qualis on a 2 lane road with no median, at around 80-90 at night. I was blinded by the high beam of a bus which was overtaking a bike and came head on to me. I had to to move left to avoid the bus and both the left wheels of the qualis went off the shoulder on to the gravel. I made the mistake of hitting the brakes to slow down. Rest was same like you. With 2 wheels on a side having very little traction and the brakes locked, the car did a 270 degree spin and landed on the other side of the road, but it hit nothing and no one was injured.

After the experience, I am much more careful while driving MUVs at high speed.

Thank the almighty for whatever had happened ! You're very lucky. That too I can't imagine a car like Innova on 2 wheels sliding without control.. Really Scary !

Thanks for sharing the tips & drive safe !

Babbanji Franklin, I was neither tired nor sleepy, as it was raining and the background was pretty dark, and the road had no border markings. Yes the car was sliding on two wheels.

This coupled with cars on headlights with full beam (not just in the opp lane but also behind us) can make us blind at times !! I experience this daily night as the Figo being a low-slung car, the headlights of the car coming behind me hits straight on the rear-view mirror (inside the car) and this takes away bit of side vision
