      Skoda Rapid - Alloy and Tyre Upgrade Options

      The basics:

      195/60 R 14.

      195 = Tyre width in mm. This is the amount of rubber that is in contact with the ground when the car is stationary.

      60 is the sidewall profile. It is a percentage of tyre width. In this case, the sidewall height is 60% of 195, which is 117mm.

      R = Radial tyre. Most people assume that R 14 means 14 inches radius of the tyre/rim. It's wrong. R is just a random alphabet used to indicate that this is a radial tyre. Crossply tyres generally have D.

      14 = Diameter of wheel/tyre in inches.

      So, 235/70R16 means a tyre which has a width of 235mm, sidewall height of 70% of 235 which is 164.5mm and is a radial tyre of diameter 16 inches.

      195/55/15 would be the obvious choice.

      How fast do you drive? The tyre brand would depend on that.

      mclaren1885 some vw car users have reported one side pulling issues with vw specific apollo tyres and its due to tread pattern so better to avoid them and chose either VW specific JK or MRF.

      There are no manufacture "specific" tyres. Tyre companies just make tyres in various sizes they think will sell and get bulk orders from car manufacturers at subsidised rates.

      Also, the size he is upgrading to is not a VW specific size. I have heard of a few VW owners complaining about Apollo Acceleres causing pulling issues, but I am pretty sure that in the hands of an experienced wheel balancing and alignment technician, the issue can be sorted out.

      In any case, to be on the safer side, then the tyres to go for would be:

      1. JK Vectras.
      2. Bridgeston MY-01.
      3. Michelin XM2.

      In VW/Skoda case, they use some odd sizes, hence the OEM spec tyres are not easy to find in many brands. Thats why I was calling about VW specific tyres. I am not tyre expert so can't say much about going for different size than the OE spec, but IMO its better to stick with OE specs for the safer bet. For example in this case the the tyre is being upgrade to 15 incher from 14, so it can be matched with specs of top end variant of Rapid.

      Accelers are doing a good job on the VW's; although there are few claims bout the pattern causing issues as Jack pointed out.
      I personally like the accelers. The Vectras are also regarded good, and the few Ventos upgraded to them are doing fine.
