      Volkswagen to re-position brands!!

German automotive giant Volkswagen is undertaking a re-positioning for its group brands in India to align with its global practice, which may see Skoda moving down in the pecking order.

The group has three brands - Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda - in the Indian market. Audi is in the luxury segment. Skoda, however, has taken a more premium positioning compared to the Volkswagen brand, contrary to the group's global practice.

"It's a question of how different brands are placed against themselves in the market. Skoda has a quite high position (in India). In the group, Skoda is little bit positioned under Volkswagen. So, we are on the way to make a correction," Volkswagen Group Board Member and Executive Vice President Ulrich Hackenberg said.

Currently, the Volkswagen sells seven brands in India -- hatchback Polo, sedans Vento, Jetta, Passat and Phaeton along with SUV Touareg and the iconic Beetle.

Skoda, on the other hand, has five models -- hatchback Fabia, sedans Rapid, Laura and Superb along with compact SUV Yeti.

At present, on a comparative basis hatchback Skoda Fabia is priced between Rs 4.60 lakh and Rs 8.10 lakh, while Volkswagen Polo is tagged at Rs 4.8 lakh to Rs 6.94 lakh.

Similarly, mid-sized sedan Skoda Rapid is tagged between Rs 6.90 lakh and Rs 9.50 lakh compared to Volkswagen Vento which costs between Rs 7.29 lakh and Rs 9.89 lakh.

In the premium sedan segment, Skoda Laura comes for Rs 12.9 lakh to Rs 18.97 lakh, while Volkswagen Jetta is priced at Rs 13.6 lakh and Rs 18.9 lakh.

In the luxury segment, Skoda Superb is available for Rs 18 lakh to Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while that of Volkswagen Passat is available from Rs 22 lakh to Rs 27.26 lakh.

The VW group has said that till 2015, India will not be a priority market for introduction of new models, such as small car Up! and major investments as the "business case is not positive".

"We are looking at the business case, which is not positive. In connection to the investment we need to do, we are not in the situation to do that," Hackenberg had said.

Volkswagen Group Chief Representative (India) John Chacko had said the firm will hold itself from taking any major decision or introducing new models in India.

During the interim period, the company will continue to launch more derivatives of models from the existing platforms, Chacko had added.

This move will reduce prices of Skoda cars marginally and even VW group is mulling towards maximum localization to lower the prices

I really do not like their plan for re positioning Skoda Brand.

Skoda has been here since quite some time and they have earned their position of being a premium car maker in years (Not talking about their A.S.S. here). This is something other companies are trying hard to achieve.
Look at Maruti, Tata, to some extend Hyundai as well etc. All these companies are trying hard to make their impression in premium car market and yet to failed to do so simply because indian customers have their perception set for these companies. On the other hand, companies like Honda, Toyota were present in premium car segment and were able to easily enter the mass market again because of the perceptin of end users.

So I suggest VW to think twice before this move.

You are absolutely right, however VW being a parent company has more veto rights when it comes to decision making, this one might be a blunder or might work for VW, end of the day we as a customer will be getting benefited by inexpensive products so from a customer point of view I support this move Similar way how Renault and Nissan works, Renault being a parent company has a premium price tag when compared to Nissan

Volkswagen group to phase out more than 40 car models:

Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) will stop producing more than 40 car models in the coming years as part of a new strategy by Europe's biggest automaker, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Saturday.

Volkswagen (VW) said on Thursday it would invest billions of euros in electric cars, ride-hailing and automated driving to become a world leader in green transport by 2025 as it reshapes its business following a diesel emissions scandal.

If a recent report to be trusted, Volkswagen will discontinue its executive sedan Jetta in India. The current model will be on sale till CKD (completely knocked down) kits are available.

The vehicle has already been discontinued globally, as the company is planning to roll out the new-generation model sometime next year. The report also says that the Indian market will not even receive the Volkswagen Jetta 2017.

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta will be based on the company’s flexible transverse-engined MQB platform that’s also used for several Skoda, Volkswagen and Audi cars globally. With an all-new engine, design and more features on offer, the new-gen Jetta is likely to be pricier than the current one. This is the reason why the company might not launch it here since the current-gen model is already among the most expensive cars in its category. When the company is already struggling to sell the current-gen model, an even more expensive model doesn’t make sense for the Indian market.

In 2015-16, Volkswagen India managed to sell 1,940 units of the Jetta as against Skoda Octavia’s 2,675 units and Toyota Corolla’s 6,506 units in the year.

The vehicle that the company is planning to bring in to India are – Volkswagen Tiguan, Polo GTI, Passat GTE and Ameo diesel. All these cars will be rolled out within next 1 year.

Wow that's sad. Probably their best car. I was even dreaming about buying it as my next car in future. Well all the best to the Octavia then
