Indian Car Sales Report - Oct 2012

From this month onwards, we'll be publishing monthly sales numbers of various cars in Indian Automotive market. Our attempt will be to bring forth true numbers in most generic, understandable, relevant and simple format which every one can head and tail out of and understanding the trend of how the car market is behaving. There will be a new thread updated every month here with the sales numbers of previous month. Below, we'll see some of the statistics for October month.

First up, we have a table and chart depicting overview of Indian car market with share from individual manufacturers. Maruti is a clear leader with over 41% of market share. Manufacturers with red color code mean that they had negative growth compared to previous month. From the table below, it is understandable that things aren't looking very good for Tata and Ford whereas Maruti and Hyundai continue to rule.

Interesting number there for bottom 10 list where we see a sudden dip in CRV sales. Optra and Lancer continue to be in low range whereas Evo-X, Grand Vitara and X-Trail and Beetle didn't even manage to open their count for last month.

      • Phenomenal job by MSIL, closed to 10K increase compared to September
      • Hyundai, again a good month, little push in Eon should result in better number
      • M & M has 2 winner in hand now!! Bolero rocking in one side and XUV500 squash buckling in other side!! Hope Quanto will add some good numbers
      • Wake up call for TML, sales are dwindling for last couple of month, though Sumo sales have increased however other models are declining. Hope Storme will change the picture
      • Toyota has to seriously look at pricing of their models!! Today a top end Innova costs 17L in Chennai and top end Etios costs 10L, Altis AT sums up to 19L!!!Your products are not worth the price you sell!! Re-look or you will repent
      • Brio combined with festival offers have improved Honda Sales, hope they would continue this numbers
      • Disappointing outlook by Ford, sales figures doesn't seems be to good when there was a new model launch!!
      • Duster seems to increase foot fall in all Renault showrooms across India!! Same engine and sharing platform have yielded good results.
      • Chevrolet needs to clean up their house and kill the non-selling models and focus more on selling ones
      • VW has seen some slowdown in last couple of months, pricing can be re-looked
      • Nissan suffering from Hoover and Dealer fight!! Hope they sort out soon and get Evalia on the road
      • Skoda needs a re-birth, VW is already working on it
      • FIAT - Time you look at the issue at your end, enough blaming the erstwhile partner
      • HM - Looks like some sarkar order

Pretty much. I think I read somewhere that MSIL are just trying to clear out the remaining stocks of Kizashi from India. This coupled with recent reinstated sense in people to not buy diesel blindly, is working for now.

      • I can't believe that the OMNI is still selling so many in numbers
      • New Fiesta seems to be a complete failure

Could we get the split of Vista/Indica combination?

Also, is the the Alto in the chart the combination of old Alto and Alto K10?

Yes, it's nice to see MSIL recovering back after what has been a disastrous few months owing to the strikes and violence in their plants. It's almost unbelievable that inspite of all that happened out there, they are back still beating the other companies by a huge margin.

FYI, the XUV500 is the most searched car on Google according to the stats published by Google. Earlier, it was the Hyundai Eon.

The new models are a total disaster. The other day, while going to a Gearheads drive, we saw a New Fiesta and looked at it as if it was a rare supercar

I think they are doing that! Phasing out the Optra was the first step. They brought in the New Captiva, Cruze, now the Sail. But last 3 months have been a lull for Chevrolet. The SAs I speak to regularly said it's common to see car sales dwindle around this time of the year and they usually pick up during the festive season. Also, the fact that they were bringing in "new" cars made the people wait a while longer.

Definitely! Now the Kizashi can be had for almost the same price that you buy a Jetta/Cruze (maybe even cheaper?). Having driven the Kizashi I can confidently say, it's a Accord beater (in most departments). It's a brilliant car to buy! Would have surely bought one if I was looking for a petrol car today. At the current price it is selling at, it is complete VFM.
