GH exclusive :- Toyota to bring Avanza to India in 2013

      GEARDHEADS EXCLUSIVE

Come 2013, Toyota will bring the Avanza to India, this product is aimed at Xylo, Quanto, Duster and Ertiga. Avanza was designed by Diahatsu and its currently sold in many South Asian countries. The new love for India towards cross-overs and mini-suv has prompted Toyota to bring in this model.

The Avanza is a new model developed as an entry-level MPV. Its spiritual predecessor was the Toyota Kijang, whose model program has since been split to two different models (the other being the larger, more expensive Toyota Innova) to expand Toyota's reach in the MPV sector. The Avanza was first launched in 2003, however it has gone through several makeovers.

Globally, Avanza is sold with 2 different engines with both being Petrol, it comes in 1.3 and 1.5 guise with an manual and auto tranny. However in India, Toyota is expected to plonk the D4D 1.4 liter Diesel engine which is currently employed in Altis and Etios twins. Toyota would plonk the same engine with FGT to keep the cost low. Toyota is expected to price it under 9L to compete with likes of other products.

Avanza is a proper 5 seater and some of the variants comes with additional jump seats or front facing seats, however like other SUV's the last seat is not comfortable for full grown adults. Also the rear seats gets an independent AC control, thought it looks after market.

Looking at the bookings for Duster, I am sure Avanza would create another wave in the market, with Eco-sport launch around the corner we can expect some fierce competition in this segment

I have personally traveled in Avanza (Not in India) and it come out as a good product for the price point, I am sure Avanza would also become a big hit in the taxi segment if Toyota opens up the market for them. With Liva and Etios being sold to taxi segment, I am sure Toyota will not think twice to market in Taxi segment

I wonder why Instead of cars like Vios, Toyota chose to bring Avanza. Do they love serving taxi-wallahs that much?

I don't see any relation. Duster isn't an MPV. Avanza will certainly create a wave, but in taxi-market.

Globally all Toyota models are open to Taxi market and they don't show disparity to them. Having said that, Taxi market has huge potential and good money maker, Knowing Toyota reliability, People will not think twice to invest in it.

OT - Just yesterday one of the call taxi operator in Chennai placed order for 50 Etios.

camchennai - I am seeing lot more Etios and Liva as TAXI's in Chennai. I will not be surprised if TATA(Indica & Indigo) and MAHINDRA(Logan) are completely decimated in the TAXI segment, at least in Chennai.

Mahindra should start allowing Verito's as Taxi.

On another note, so what are the differences between the Avanza and Innova, apart from the supposedly engine difference?

Sorry, let me change my statement. Duster looks like an SUV. This is what people love, right? Avanza clearly looks like an MPV, something people may not like.

Btw, isn't Xylo kind of a copy of Avanza?

There are 2 types of taxi markets in India, especially here in Delhi/NCR, daily and premier segment.

Daily taxis are used by call centers and offices for daily transportation of their employees and staff. This is a very huge market which was earlier ruled by Quails and Innova. However, Innova completely lost this market after the launch of new Sumo Gold, Rino, tavera and Xylo as these MUVs are comparatively cheaper in price and easy to maintain.

Now, the second segment of Taxi (Premier Segment) is still ruled by Innova and there is no other MUV which is giving it a competition.

I think, if Toyota can price Avanza correctly they can again go back into the first market else Avanza will be competing with its sibling Innova.

Toyota Avanza India, Variant Review, Price

Not sure if one can read too much into figures given in the above link but noted the kerb weight of Avanza to be 1100 kg.
Now the Ford Figo 1.4 Titanium (i.e. top-end model) is 1130 kgs

It's actually the correct figure. Just delete safety and you get much lighter car and a smaller engine to run it. Only thing I don't know is if there was any crash testing done on Avanza in Toyota facility or only a computer simulation was done on it, like it was the case with Etios.

Precisely what I felt. Bigger doesn't mean stronger ! Its easy to lull the average joe or jane into buying it - showing something big and pocket money
