Chrysler to Build Electric Fiat 500 for U.S. by 2012

After showing an electric Fiat 500 at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler announced today that it will develop and manufacture a production version for the North American market.

“The alliance with Fiat presented new opportunities to merge Chrysler Group engineering knowledge with new platforms,” said Scott Kunselman, Chrysler’s senior vice president of engineering. “The Fiat 500 EV is an outstanding example of our efforts. The 500 is a small, lightweight platform perfect for integrating electric vehicle technologies.”

Last October, sources close to the Fiat-Chrysler organization suggested engineers formerly tied to Chrysler’s ENVI group -- the organization formed to develop Chrysler’s electric and hybrid driveline technologies -- were now charged with developing an electrified 500. The automaker rolled out a conceptual version of the 500 EV (pictured) at the 2010 Detroit auto show, but released no specifications on what lurked beneath the hood.

Chrysler is still mum on the details, other than saying the 500 EV will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. Development of the entire system is already underway in Auburn Hills, and should be rolling off the assembly lines in Toluca, Mexico, by the end of 2012 -- a full year after the gasoline-powered 500 arrives in Chrysler dealerships across the country.

There’s no word on if Chrysler’s EV driveline will be incorporated into 500s sold in Europe, but seeing as CEO Sergio Marchionne is adamant on sharing technologies and platforms between Chrysler and Fiat divisions, it seems like a realistic possibility.

Even if this comes to India, first and most important thing is the charging points and min it has to run 100-120kms in one charge and if they can achieve this then they will win the market

fiat brought the 500 to india only for brand image. I doubt they'll take the extra effort to get the electric down here.

What price does this silly car sell at in India? At that price we should be getting the Abarth version.

If they bring the electric, I am sure the only vehicles on the road will be the TD ones .

IT retails around 15 i guess.

I prefer the total white colour combination.

This is the most beautiful car after the beetle.

probably this is built to take on beetle as the design looks almost similar(upto 60-70%) and added to it the electric powered one and if the price is 15L then it will sell more than beetle IMO

Customized Fiat 500 Convertible "Sassicaia" by Aznom

Fiat isn't alone in creating special edition versions of its highly successful 500 mini. Aznom, an Italian company that designs and manufactures various products including leather goods, furniture and customized cars, has presented the Fiat 500 Convertible Sassicaia.

Named after one of Italy's top Bordeaux-style red wines, the limited edition 500 Convertible Sassicaia features a series of unique styling treats inside and out.

The car is finished in a two-tone beige paint scheme, while the mirror caps, the rear handle and the side moldings are decorated with wood. Other highlights include the new alloy wheels and the chrome accents on the front and rear bumper.

Inside, Aznom has outfitted the 500 Convertible with plenty of wood, while high-quality leather with the firm's logos covers the seats, door panels, steering wheel and gearbox area.

The car also comes with a set of matching leather bags.

While Aznom did not release pricing, the company said that only a limited number of units of the Fiat 500 Convertible "Sassicaia" will be produced.

FEV's LiiON Fiat 500 gets Rotarized

At the Vienna Motor Symposium, what's billed as "one of the world's most important power train events", German volt-heads FEV brought an electric 500 with a ****el range-extending engine (the setup is called LiiON Drive).

The rotary engine is mounted in place of the fuel tank, which has shrunk to 12 liters / 3.2 gallons. It gives the little city car an extra 190 miles of road to travel on top of its 50-mile electric range. The added range is one part of convincing people that the car's viable, but usability is another major issue (even in a spatially-challenged car like the 500).

FEV's LiiON-powered 500 retains its four seats and cargo area, and "drivers commented favourably regarding the excellent NVH characteristics of the [AIXRO] ****el powertrain in particular".

New Special Edition Fiat 500 Blackjack with Matte Finish

Fiat has announced a new limited edition version of the 500 city car, which will go on sale across Europe (including Britain) in September. Called, appropriately enough, the 500 Blackjack, the special mini is decked out in a matte black finish with glossy black details such as the door handles, exterior mirrors, fog lamp surrounds and bumper trims. The car rides on 16-inch black alloy wheels with a red frame on the center, while some variants also get red brake calipers.

The package also upgrades the interior with seats upholstered in red leather or alternatively, in black leather and fabric, unique trim and silver seams on the leather steering wheel and gear knob.

The 500 Blackjack will be available with all engines in the range including the new TwinAir 85HP 0.9-liter two-cylinder turbo petrol. Prices in Italy start from €13,850. by carscoop
