Hhhmmm. I think its one of them freak incidents and we must not pass judgments saying Tata cars are prone to fires? I have seen plenty of other cars char to a state they no longer can be recognized which car it was to start with.

Does anyone remember cases of Ferrari cars catching fire on accidents? Imagine spending crores for a car for all the safety you think you have and it bursts up into flames.

PS: I think this thread belongs in the traffic lights section. So moving it there.

Regarding buses burnt there is a clear information with BMTC (Bangalore Local Transport). All the Electrical lines were burnt. So due to that reason totally 10 busses were returned. This happened with Marcopolo Automatic busses.

Information got from BMTC Garage KBS

The same happened with a few Marcopolo buses in New Delhi also a few days back and the reason given by Tata was that the buses did not undergo the maintenance schedule..

Another Day, Another Nano, Another Fire

Tata Motors may be busy celebrating the Nano’s birthday but a brand new Tata Nano caught fire yet again. The incident took place near Boriyavi village on National Highway 8, when a fleet of eleven Nano cars was being driven to a dealer in Ahmadabad to be delivered in Vadodara. This is second such instance in recent days (read the other one here). One of the Nano cars, which was in the middle the fleet, caught fire in its rear portion. Thankfully, the driver of the car is safe.

About time a free fire extinguisher is given with every Nano, since TATA does not seems to having too much going to resolve this!

      Not even a statement!

      Not this again.

I hope it doesn't escalate here.

      I am going to reply:

These incidents obviously shouldn't happen. But the reality is that they do. Why such incidents happen always needs to be looke on a case by case basis.

The Tata bus fires and the 2 different Nano incidents are in no way related.

Unlike other manufacturers in India (not to mention foreign manufacturers) Tata seems to be in the limelight in the public.

London transport started to buy bendy buses from Mercedes, which had a high rate of fires because of a major design fault. It was mentioned a couple of times in the London news and nobody seemed to bother.

I have had a conversation about the Nano last night at the Italian ight in London. One of the guys, whose father lives in Mumbai can't wait to get one. Nobody over here is talking negatively of the Nano. I would buy one (only in yellow of course). But we are aware of the fire incidents.

A lot of people blow the whole thing out of proportion.

Just to give an idea how big the re-call problem is have a look at these sites:

Car Recalls : - The AA

      VOSA - Vehicle Recalls

Auto Recalls - View the Latest Car Recalls Online

Download this and scroll through. You will be shocked:

FLAT_INV.zip (if it doesn't work you can download it from this page: Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), ... Downloads)

And this is only the cars available in the USA!

And just for the people who thinks that Toyota acted so honorably look at the statement from the 5th of April (Home | National Highway Traffic Safety ... sportation, which is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the USA):

April 5: Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that NHTSA is seeking the maximum civil penalty of $16.375 million against Toyota Motor Corporation for failing to notify the auto safety agency of the dangerous “sticky pedal” defect for at least four months, despite knowing of the potential risk to consumers. Approximately 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. were recalled in late January for the sticky pedal defect. The penalty being sought against Toyota would be the largest civil penalty ever assessed against an auto manufacturer by NHTSA.
